In today's knowledge economy, high-tech firms and high-paying, high-tech jobs are key factors in economic growth and prosperity. Some economists have estimated that every high-tech job creates an additional five or so spinoff jobs, a significant ripple effect through the economy.
A new analysis by Michael Mandel of the Progressive Policy Institute identifies 25 leading locations for high-tech information jobs. While much research on high-tech meccas looks at the metro level, Mandel's study identifies the concentration of high-tech jobs by county, which offers a closer look at clustering and agglomeration.
The map below, by the Martin Prosperity Institute's Zara Matheson, shows the 25 leading counties on Mandel's "Tech/info Jobs Index." This metric looks at what Mandel has identified as the "tech/information" sector, a broader definition that acknowledges the huge number of digital and tech jobs in more traditional industries like film, news, publishing, and telecommunications.

Interesting data. Growth in urban areas is a bit surprising, although I find the trend toward major university towns more worth noting. I think that since overall growth is so much smaller than it should be, what growth is occurring is quite spotty. A good free-market economy driven by conservative principles would fuel much more tech growth in all parts of the country.
This measures growth rate as a percentage, and does not measure quantity of jobs available. Nice to know, but not going to steer you to locations with the jobs
But there’s only one Silicon Valley,,, and SF aint it. . .
No surprises in the map.
Huntsville AL is a surprise for me. I never get calls from recruiters there.
Maybe they only accept H1B’s
There is a huge tech industry in downtown SF, an area called SOMA. South of Market Area.
Johnson Space Flight Center, Space Camp, UA Huntsville, and all that stuff supporting that like the Redstone facility and the like are down there.
Have a kid that got his master’s from there.
Figured as much, but LA and Orange Counties in CA with 6 million people don’t register at all.
