Fleetwood Mac says bassist John McVie has been diagnosed with liver cancer. The group is canceling the Australian and New Zealand leg of their tour.

"Fleetwood Mac, who has just completed the European leg of their phenomenally successful worldwide tour, has announced the cancellation of their upcoming 14 date tour of Australia and New Zealand," the group said Sunday in a statement posted on Facebook.

"John McVie, one of the co-founding and original members of Fleetwood Mac is now scheduled to be in treatment for cancer during that period of time," the statement continued. "We are sorry to not be able to play these Australian and New Zealand dates. We hope our Australian and New Zealand fans as well as Fleetwood Mac fans everywhere will join us in wishing John and his family all the best."

The band went on tour this year after releasing their first new material in April since 2003's "Say You Will," Billboard magazine said.

Liver cancer! How terrible.

My father's twin brother had it and died within a year.
It was very painful and horrible, but QUICK by comparison to other cancers. NOT a good way to go.

"John McVie, one of the co-founding and original members of Fleetwood Mac..."

Actually the group's founder, Peter Green, had to coax McVie into joining the band (after Mick Fleetwood had already committed to leaving Mayall) by naming the band, "Fleetwood Mac".

Sad to hear! I was never a big fan of the band. I loved Buckingham’s guitar style, but the monotone singer (what’s her name?) made listening impossible. I went to a Zappa concert, and they were the opening band. They were awful! Everyone split to the lobby whilst they played.

Wikipedia saying he’s 67. Young IMO.

Stevie Nicks — monotone, and sings through her nose to the extent that she sounds like a kazoo. Awful, awful singer.

The pre-Buckinham/Nicks FM had its ups and downs (three lead guitarists, each of whom went off the rails one by one) but their “Bare Trees” album is somewhere in my top 500 (other than that “Mrs. Scarrot” bs track, I skip that).

Sad news, hope for the best. Fleetwood Mac was great in all it’s incarnations over the years. Still is.

but the monotone singer (what’s her name?)

Monotone is the least of her problems. You can't understand a word she sings. I remember way back when Creedence Clearwater came out with Willie and the Poor Boys. A panel on late night TV was discussing it when one of the panelists said, he (Fogerty) sounds like he went to the Stevie Nicks School of Diction.

He was a heavy drinker who quit in 1987. However, the liver damage remained which is the likely cause of the cancer.

Young in the scheme of things but even if it was caught early age is one of the key variables for a successful liver transplant.

Thank you.

I was always so surprised that Larry Hagman survived for so long. There is hope.

If that is the cause, he actually has a better prognosis. If not caused by drinking this is almost always a secondary site, so he’s already finished.

She had nose surgery at some point for a perforated septum (?)
brought on indirectly as by long-term topical drug use, like cocaine.

The trouble is that far too often, “by the time you realize it’s out to get you, it’s got you.”

However, the rules with cancer change so rapidly that who knows? I know there’s an entire class of research devoted to killing cancer that has widely metastasized. And every now and then they get somebody who is down to their final days, and suddenly, complete remission.

Fleetwood Mac can and has replaced everybody over the years like those “Temptations” or “Drifters” that are still touring and pretending to be the real thing, but it (FM) cannot replace the Fleetwood or the Mac!
