A beached sperm whale will be put to sleep after it was spotted in Madeira Beach near John's Pass Thursday morning, according to reports.
The Florida Wildlife Commission was investigating just how the 30-foot whale became stranded about 20 yards from shore, reported NBC affiliate WFLA.
Officials told WFLA the whales never go so close the shore unless they are in duress. In this case, wildlife officials determined the most humane thing to do was to end the whale's suffering.
Erin Fougeres with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association told WFLA this whale was emaciated -- its ribs and skull were visible as it lay in the water. She said NOAA is waiting for a strong enough sedative to arrive from the University of Florida in Gainesville to euthanize the whale.
The whale had been on the beach since 7 a.m., according to WFLA.

The highway engineer, George Thorton, who made the decision to blow up that whale died this last Sunday. He was 84
“Poor thing must have signed onto obamacare”
It tried to sign and get treatment for slightly sprained flipper 3 years ago. It’s been trying to sign into the website all that time and just gave up.
I thought this would be a Michael Moore or Algore thread
Dying whale beaches itself ping.
Beached sperm — i thot it was a spring break article
Is this the whale demolition written about by Dave Barry? One of the funniest pieces of writing I have ever read. Tears streaming down I laughed so hard.
