Hiker Survives 3 Months in Wilderness Following Bear Attack [maybe ate his dog, who saved him]

A hiker was rescued after surviving a bear attack and spending three months, exposed to snow and freezing temperatures, in a remote corner of northern Canada, police said.

Police located Marco Lavoie, 44, in the wilderness near Waskaganish, Quebec, on Wednesday, 10 days after his family reported him missing and nearly a month after the experienced outdoorsman was expected to return from a two month hiking expedition.

Police believe Lavoie survived the bear attack uninjured, sometime in August, when his German shepherd got in between the man and the bear, Sgt. Ronald McInnis, spokesman for the Quebec Provincial Police told ABCNews.com.

Hours from being a dead tough guy.

Not much detail on the bear portion of the story.

When in Bear country and not moving food should be hung in Bear bags or similar devices - and your campsite kept as clean as possible to cut down on smells.

Since much of his equipment went with the food it must be assumed he either just stopped, was packed to move or moving and the gear was destroyed while the bear went after the food.

He was camping prior to the Bear attack. He was surviving after the Bear atack. In surviving you make do with what you have. He wasn’t doing so well in the surviving department as the authorities said he was hours from death.

That story is like an episode of “I shouldn’t be alive.” I thought it was one of the best shows in tv. I wish they’d bring it back.

I’m guessing a dog like that, you don’t eat all at once.

"This guy is a real sh*t and shouldn't ever be allowed to own another dog."

Who should prevent him from acquiring another dog?

Lavoie survived the bear attack uninjured

Then he wasn't attacked by a bear!

"...anti pitbull thread where he covers his face with BBQ sauce..."

I don't know why, but that part of your post made me laugh out loud here all by myself...:)

"Cool, I figured you’d know. I wish I could find the anti pitbull thread where he covers his face with BBQ sauce."

That right there is a statement that would benefit from some explanation!

Lost in Quebec?

Isn’t that just about the same as getting lost in Central Park? Well, except for the pigeons and the rats, I mean...

The Freeper in question owns several pitbulls, and he let them lick the sauce off in response to a poster who posted something to the effect “you’ll think differently when one rips your face off”.

Before going out to areas like that he needed to know how to keep his supplies from attracting bears and in a way bears could not eat his food.

Easier said than done. I have read that a bear can smell a can of tuna even if you've removed the label and washed the can. As for keeping the food out of a bear's reach all the time you wouldn't be able to hike very far if your food is hung from a tree 24-7. Sooner or later you'll have to put it on your back and walk.
