BALTIMORE (WJZ)Its a horrific story of mans best friend becoming a womans worst nightmare. A Northeast Baltimore woman was attacked and killed by her own dog.
Rochelle Ritchie reports the pit bull had attacked before but was back in the owners custody.
Advocates say the attack should not have happened. The woman had a huge gash on her face from a previous attack from her dog.
Terry Douglass, 56, is the latest victim in Baltimore City to be killed by a pit bull, a dog shes raised since it was a puppy.

There isn’t a week that goes by that I don’t see a report about some person being mauled by a pit bull. And I’ve been seeing those stories for years. I’ve also had my own run-ins with the breed - none of them pleasant.
State legislatures really need to set up some legal guidelines for owning this breed of dog. They ought to be treated the same way as other dangerous, exotic animals.
You must be Chet99!
I think a pitbull should be given to each member of congress
as a thank you gift for the bang up job they are doing.
Idiot!!! Thank God there were no children around.
Nope, but I do vaguely recall that poster. Wasn't he posting about dogs all the time? I forget.
Pitbull is not man’s best friend at all.
I had one dog in all my life turn on me.
A chow. He bit the hell out of my left hand for no reason.
He was put down the next day.
There are too many nice dogs in this world that need homes to give one to a violent breed.
I’m starting to think that pit bulls are reincarnated muslims. Natural born killers.
Good one! Chomp Crunch Akbar!!
If I have an old, half blind and grumpy dog turn on me I want it to be a 3 lb. Chihuahua. Pit Bulls can be cute as puppies but even the “nice ones” get old then it’s time to worry.
Poor you! I have run ins with pit Bulls almost every day at the dog park and I to have been viciously licked and loved by them! however I have had many nasty run ins with little terriers and poodle which tend to be overly aggressive and cause fights. You must be very happy to be so ignorantly opinionated, but hey that’s why America is so great you can have your opinion and I can have mine and we can both go on in life happy with our selves. Oh by the way in case you want to educate yourself http://www.cesarsway.com/dogbehavior/basics/How-Did-Pit-Bulls-Get-a-Bad-Rap
Unfreakinbelievable. I hope Jen doesn't have any children in her house. Ever.
Must just be a coincidence!
Just read that story - wow
You're defending the indefensible. Reports of pit bull maulings are constantly running in the press, and they have been for many, many years.
The overwhelming numbers of these reports indicate that this breed of dog is genetically predisposed to violent behavior. It's simply a fact.
It's also a fact that pit bull terriers were originally bred to be hunter-killers. Look it up. Apparently, that instinct has never died out in them, and is now expressed by thousands upon thousands of violent, unprovoked attacks by these animals every year.
Deny reality if you like. That's your business. Most rational people see that there needs to be some sort of safety protocols put in place to protect the public from this breed of exotic animal.
It is not the breed but the breeders that are the problem
The wonderful pet dogs that we all love are all vicious animals, wolves, in reality.
Centuries of breeding has taken the wild animal and turned it in to a loving companion.
Unethical breeders have reversed that process with the some pit bulls to breed aggressiveness back in to the breed for pit fighting.
As with any pet you intend to purchase always perform a background check on the reputation of the breeder. Any reputable breeder will take back a dog that does not work out with your family. If you take a puppy home and the dog turn mean the breeder should take the dog back with no more that a simple explanation from you as to the behavior problem. (If it nothing more than the puppy pees on the rug dont expect an all right then bring him back)
There are plenty of breeders out there breeding pit bulls that are not overly aggressive and have plenty of history of producing fine family pets.
But with any breed an occasional bad pup will get through to an owner that has problems. My sister-in-law got a Great Pyrenees pup that was simply psychotic. The dog would be playful and cheerful one moment and be growling and snapping the next. The family tried for weeks to rehabilitate the dog but finally had to tearfully take the dog back to the breeder who put the dog down.
I agree. Look up the history of the pit bull terrier some time. They were initially bred to be hunter-killers. They still are.
No It’s no coincidence, evil people have been destroying many of the breed by selectively breeding animals for aggression, you know kind of like what the liberals have been doing with the inner city youths for decades. But go ahead be hysterical and call for the destruction of an entire breed with a much longer history of being loving family dogs because of what a few, yes few badly damaged by humans do. Oh by the way should we eliminate all police because for the last few years there have been more and more stories about police killing or beating people out of hand? Just asking because that seems to be your logic.
Really? I've owned 9 dogs and none have been vicious.
My dog ever bit me he’d get one very important lesson about who the boss is.
He wouldn’t do it twice.
You didn’t bother to read the article at all did you? And I have looked up the history of the animal and I unlike you apparently have contact with a wide variety of pits almost daily. Your logic is poor. As I wrote to another with Pit phobia using your logic we should eliminate police because weekly if not daily we see stories of “some” police killing or beating people out of hand without provocation, or is only logic that we should apply to animals?
Never a cop around when you need one.
News stories about pit bulls are like stories about the clap, rarely anything good.
So were Rhodesian Ridgebacks and they still are but are also fantastic family pets. Look it up.
almost daily he posted an article about a pit bull killing or mauling a kid or senior citizen...he didn’t find all the articles himself. I freepmailed him to ask and he said most were freepmailed by other freepers to himi that didn’t want to get into the hate fest of pit owners that followed defending the attacks as the owners fault.
I have two cockers. They both made a mistake growling at me, once.
They know we are always buddies and they can do whatever they want aand even have run of the house as far as I’m concerned but, when I deliver a command I’m in charge.
It will keep them safe, keep them alive and keep everyone safe.
Sit! Don’t even think of moving until I give you the release command.
Heel! I’m not joking and I better not have to chase you down.
Lay down! I’ve had enough of your barking or jumping on me or others.
I even feed them jerky’s forcing them to take it without biting. I hate it when a dog chomps down with no regard for who is handing it to them.
Other than that, they can run all over empty both their toy chests and make me scratch them where they itch or rub their ears.
Think I’ll take em to the beach Friday.
Are you intentionally missing the point?
Would your dog not defend you if you were attacked?
I am pretty sure that my that my dog would tare somebody up that attacked me being the vicious animal that he is at his essence.
Poor misunderstood little Pitt Bulls! Tear apart a few too many children and adults, year in and year out - and now people don’t realize how wonderful they really are.
I spent hours with my dogs before deciding they were the right one.
I’m just glad they’re not katz.
Otherwise I would be working for them.
Still feels like I constantly do stuff for them. Not sure if I’m just amusing myself or they really like all the goofy things I do.
A 65 year-old Spanaway, Washington (just outside of Tacoma) woman has died today from her injuries from two pit-bulls. Nga Woodhead died from a heart attack which may have been related to her injuries which included a broken arm and lacerations. Police are waiting confirmation by autopsy that the injuries were related to the dog attacks.
Police say the woman went through surgery to have a titanium rod placed in her arm. She was just about to be released from St. Joseph's Hospital when she collapsed from a heart attack.
She was attacked October 30th while on her daily walk. It took three men to fend the dogs off of her after they also suffered bites leading one man to shoot one of them, which ran away. A witness, Alana Hall, described the scene, "One dog was hanging onto one person's arm and then onto one person's leg." Police tracked down both dogs and shot both of them.
The owner of the dogs, Santiago Quezada, does not know how the dogs got out of his fenced yard.
Santiago Quezada's fenced yard.
Sometimes even smart people can be dumb when it comes to the Breed-Of-Peace.
I know a gal, MIT electrical engineer... bought a friggin Pitt Bull for a pet. STUPID
I had a bad encounter with a Pitt, with the aid of a 1911 45cal it was dispatched to doggie hell...good riddance.
I would like to think so, but......Irish Setters, English Setters and Springers aren't noted for their aggressive or protective nature.
Neither are Chocolate Labs but if a stranger comes to the door I have to hold him back and lock him in the bathroom just to be sure. He goes nuts; hair on the back stands up, he barks and bares his teeth. Its rather intimidating if nothing else. But I wont risk his biting so I lock him up.
I just looked up Chet 99’s posting history. Of the last 50 articles he posted there was only 1 article concerning a pitbull attack.
I suspect that some folks reading this have never gotten all that familiar with the FR Keyword feature. Try clicking on some of them just above Reply #1.
Anyone who needs to defend the pitbull breed in my experience is one of three types of people, if its a guy, one with an extremely small penis and a huge ego, overcompensating, #2 a ghetto black, or #3 a woman living in a trailer park with an IQ of 85 and a substance abuse problem. Educate yourself, pitbulls were bred for aggression...duh, they have a bite pressure in the top 10 of all breeds including in that list a wolf and a police trained German shepherd. Of course some of them are sweet and can lick the skin off your face, but all it takes is something to trigger those hundreds of years of selective breeding, a small child squealing and running, a helpless handicap person who pets them the wrong way. Now lets go over this again...if a cocker spaniel loses its temper you get a nasty bite maybe requiring stiches, a pitbull loses it and you could end up in the morgue. They instinctively are BRED to go for your face and neck. ITS WHY THEY ARE BRED FOR BLOODY COMBAT. Do the world a favor stop trying to convince the other sane members of the human race that the world is flat and pitbulls make great family pets. Its just idiocy. If there was an ONLY kill shelter exterminating pitbulls I would contribute handsomely to it. This breed needs to go away. Oh and whomever tried to make a stupid comparison.. Rhodesian Ridgebacks...for which I have one were bred to hunt lions, not bred to fight each other and other dogs. Pitbulls have serious genetic issues with aggression, too many to breed out at this point.
Some psychology as to why pit bull owners come up with their drivel to defend their vicious pets.
How come pit bull owners say, "My dog might lick you to death." To understand the experience of owning a negatively perceived dog, Tufts Center for Animals and Public Policy did a study on pit bull owners. Researchers found that owners of out-law dog breeds directly feel the stigma targeted at their breed and resort to various tactics to lessen it. One of the tactics included attempts to counterbalance the pit bull's menacing appearance and physical power with overwhelming "affectionate" behavior, such as: "My dog might lick you to deathFrom dogsbite.org
Pop psychology to be sure, but probably more than a little true.
I feel bad that the woman died but not that she was stupid to keep such a dog after having previous encounters.
You can’t fix stupid!
I think the dogbite website Is a very interesting resource for those who are actually rational about dogs. In reality pit bull owners probably aren't any more irrational about their dogs than any other group of vicious animal owners, but just about every one of the irrational posts defending the breed I've seen on these threads is shot down on the web site. Interesting read.
Myth #1: It's the owner not the breed The outdated debate, "It's the owner, not the breed," has caused the pit bull problem to grow into a 30-year old problem.1 Designed to protect pit bull breeders and owners, the slogan ignores the genetic history of the breed and blames these horrific maulings -- inflicted by the pit bull's genetic "hold and shake" bite style -- on environmental factors. While environment plays a role in a pit bull's behavior, it is genetics that leaves pit bull victims with permanent and disfiguring injuries.
The pit bull's genetic traits are not in dispute. Many appellate courts agree that pit bulls pose a significant danger to society and can be regulated accordingly. Some of the genetic traits courts have identified include: unpredictability of aggression, tenacity ("gameness" the refusal to give up a fight), high pain tolerance and the pit bull's "hold and shake" bite style.2 According to forensic medical studies, similar injuries have only been found elsewhere on victims of shark attacks.
Perpetuators of this myth also cannot account for the many instances in which pit bull owners and family members are victimized by their pet dogs. From 2005 to 2012, pit bulls killed 151 Americans, about one citizen every 19 days. Of these deaths, 52% involved a family member and a household pit bull.4 Notably, in the first 8 months of 2011, nearly half of those killed by a pit bull was its owner. One victim was an "avid supporter" of Bad Rap, a recipient of Michael Vick's dogs
In this case it fixed itself.
On Nov. 4th,2013, another woman was killed by 2 Pitties in Kernersville, NC. She had fed the dogs for years...
I have met many a pit bull at the dog park that are sweet as pie. Would I ever own one? Probably not. Dogs are bred for specific purposes and pit bulls were bred for fighting in the dog pit. (Hence the name) If you have owned a dog bred for a specific purpose (herding, pointing, retrieving, going to ground) and observe them doing the job they were bred for they are in the zone. I have a Jack Russell mutt and if she gets a scent in a hole she is all over it, head in, butt up and tail going a mile a minute. It is hard to snap her out of it. I imagine a pit bull on the attack is the same thing. I dont think pit bulls should be banned or anything like that but the owners must be held responsible for dogs under their care.
Sadly, even dog shows harm breeds. After Westminster, many people run out and buy "copies" of the winner. Doesn't work. Litter lot sales. Inexperienced breeders. Pressure to breed more and more of a certain breed. And the result is a bunch of roach-backed, dysplasia- prone mutts. The faults of a particular dog or breed are only accentuated by inexperienced breeders....
Pit Bulls are owned by two types of people.
People who are stupid and people who want to use the dog for intimidation.
The dogs are basically useless except to intimidate neighbors.
Easily said, but not easily done. Quite a few years ago a woman my wife worked with was going home to her apartment when she was attacked by two pit bulls that were left un restrained in the back of a pickup by some guy visiting another woman at the complex. She had over 400 stitches initially and years of reconstructive surgery after. The police never were able to identify who the guy was (I also suspect they didn't try all that hard). The woman he was screwing either didn't know how to find him or decided not to give him up.
I'm speculating at this point, but I suspect that even it they did find him he wouldn't have two dimes to rub together, and would be unable to compensate the woman for the injury his dogs did. This is often the case with the
trailer trash people who own pit bulls. They don't have the assets to compensate anyone for even a tithe of the damage their animals do.
Breed specific legislation? What is this—DU?
Yeah, lets ban dogs so we can be safe ... like Chicago.
Here’s a better idea: ban yourself.
Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passion, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence. John Adams, U.S. president 1797-1801
Truth about pit bulls web site
Pit bull or mouse, ANY animal that believes it’s superior to a human and bites that human needs a quick, on the spot death. Period. I’ve killed many dogs under that philosophy and never been prosecuted for it. And bite my tongue, the police were always on my side.
Ridicule all you wish.
You bet we have the freedom to be ignorant. And that word means ‘uneducated’ or perhaps ‘uninformed’ sometimes with a ‘rude’ component.
So, willfully burying your head in the sand about a subject as plain as the inherent problems with this breed, generates in me the hope that I do not read a news account of a certain Freeper getting mauled along with his earlier quotes about how great Pit Bulls are.
Good luck FRiend.
