A New Jersey man who won a $338 million Powerball jackpot, among the largest lottery winnings, is embroiled in a court fight with his former girlfriend over the money. Pedro Quezada of Passaic was the sole winner of the Powerball drawing last spring, worth about $152 million after taxes. His lawyer argues that Inez Sanchez has no claim to the money because the couple were never married.

When morons win the powerball... I smell a discovery channel show in the making!
If you’re not married, then what’s his is his and what’s here’s is her’s.
How did he lose $20 million?
Before hubby & I got divorced (we since got remarried to each other, we’re weird) we had a handshake agreement that any lottery prize over I think $20K we would split 50/50 regardless of any other change in our circumstances.
Sadly we never got to live up to our agreement.
If you do the math, he still has $69,700,000.
Gee...the concept of marriage is so archaic and outdated...
Sanchez's attorney says that a large chunk of the lottery winnings is already gone, claiming $57
million has been sent to Quezada's native Dominican Republic, $5 million was given away,
$300,000 was spent on the home in Clifton, and $20 million can't be located, the newspaper
reported.

This goes to a jury, he’s going to lose. The Jury will in all probability decide it common law marriage even though the state’s laws don’t actually support common law.
I say if they comingled funds during their relationship she has a good case, perhaps not by actual law, but by society standards.
Sheesh, it’s like how much of a problem would it have been if he just gave her $5m from the start?
But good luck collecting, sounds like he’s spreading the money about
“Charlie Murphy!...”
Why is it that the United States is the only country I know of that collects income tax on lottery winnings? Almost every other country in the world, including the semi-socialist European countries, don't collect tax on winnings.
My all time favorite lottery winner is the guy, Curtis something, who won millions in the NY lottery maybe 20 years ago..he was broke, unemployed, showed up to collect his check is a limo, wearing a tux, with his wife AND his girlfriend..About 15 years later..we has again flat broke..
“.... attorneys for Sanchez say Quezada purchased the ticket based on the couple’s shared earnings. Sanchez and Quezada lived together for 10 years, have a child together, and shared ownership of a grocery store in Passaic, attorneys say.
So, is she entitled to a portion of his underwear and socks?
The last paragraph of the full article says it all. Cultural?
They were man and wife for ten years and have a child.
At least her child support should go up.
Great movie!
No, the government clock punchers are the big co-winner in every jackpot. They got $186 million tax free, Pedro got just $152 million of it. Playing legal lotto, the baby momma needs to sue her real husband: daddy big gov.
Actually, you are under-representing Uncle Daddy Govt's share of the pot... they only put half of all lottery proceeds into the jackpot. They collected $676 million to make that $338 million jackpot. They keep $338 million, and then taxed $186 million more. Pedro got $152 million, and government took in $490 million overall, , not $186 million... more than triple what Pedro received.
(Keep in mind, government first declared it illegal for churches and private organizations (and mobsters) to "play the numbers", because of the fraud and risk and gambling addictions... but once the competition was gone, government stepped in and did the exact same thing.)
Reminds me of that old joke about the guy coming home with a winning ticket and packing in front of his wife.
She says “honey, where are we going?”
He says “I don’t know where you’re going but I’m off to Hawaii”
