Sinead O'Connor: 'I'm so Lonely in Ireland' (Stuck in the Middle Ages)
Starpulse ^ | November 10th, 2013 | Dave Simpson

Sinead O'Connor has bashed her native Ireland in a new online journal, revealing she feels "lonely" living there.

The singer/songwriter, who is currently on tour in North America, admits she feels like a target back home because locals are stuck in the past and they don't appreciate people who are "different".

O'Connor, who has battled mental health issues in the past, has often been picked on for her outspoken views and she sparked a Twitter war of words with Miley Cyrus in September (13) after criticising the 20 year old for her provocative MTV Video Music Awards performance and Wrecking Ball video, in which the pop star appeared naked.

And now it seems the Nothing Compares 2 U singer is taking issue with the Irish.

In the new diary entry, she writes, "Ireland is a painful struggle for me because it’s still in the witch burning middle X ages in so many ways. In America it’s ok to be ‘different’, which is why the music business was created - for people like all us rockers.

"There’s no X sense of rock and roll in Ireland at all. It’s a very lonely place for me consequently."

And it appears she's not looking forward to going home when her current tour ends: "I hate leaving my friends when the tour legs are over. Musicians only make sense to other musicians. And I don’t like too much (to be) lonely. At the end of day, I'm a small female."

Signing off, she adds, "So, goodnight America. I wish you were Ireland. Please can you claim me? Can I seek artistic asylum if not physical?"

I thought one of her best songs was the theme song to the movie “The Young Victoria”. Unfortunately, like many artists, she’s not grounded in God’s reality and won”t “find herself” and peace until she finds Him - kind of like the rest of us. Pray she does.

“...how in the world does one get “lonely” in her own country with her own people???”

Well, to start with the new generation probably has never heard of her and the old generation remembers mostly her bald head and saying the enemy is the Pope.

Yes, my friends, watch out when the career slides downward.

I had a 'girlfriend' from Ireland, right here on FR, many years ago. Nothing more to say there.

which is why the music business was created - for people like all us rockers.

Get ready for a little rant. In college, I was a Performance major. While I was there, they introduced a new major, Music Industry. I was one of the first people asked to participate in this new major, and I couldn't come up with enough incarnations of NO.

I knew the difference between music and a manufactured product.

I think in Sinead's case, it was kinda in between for a while, but the manufacturers eventually dumped her, because she was no longer making them money.

She's probably better off away from that.

Flame if you wish, rant off... 8~)

Any chick who shaves her head, unless she has cancer, isn’t playing with a full deck.

Come back to the Catholic Church girl, and stay in America.

Go visit the pope. Write him a letter. No apologies or pre-stated qualifications, just some talkin’.

Facebook/twitter is making her even more lonely - only actual people one on one is a relationship.

Classic SNL skit, if I recall later in the skit Sinatra threatens Billy Idol (played by Sting) “Watch it kid, I’ve passed stools bigger than you”

Funny stuff.

As I recall, that was with Phil Hartman doing the ‘Chairman of the Board’. Hartman was so dang funny. He did a great Bill Clinton also. I miss that guy. I don’t know if he was a lefty or not (I suspect he was) but he was dang funny!!

I don't get all the hostility to Sinead O'Connor in this thread. What has she done to all you people that warrants all this hostility?

OK, so she rips up a picture of the Pope on stage. It's just an expression of free speech. Be offended if you must but move on already - I think it's been 20 years since she did that. I did things 20 years ago that I'm not proud of either.

Hey, I'm not looking to date Sinead or anything but I think we should cut her some slack. As for her music, her catalogue continues to sell strongly. I kind of like her voice and I like Ireland and all the Celtic music and whiskey that goes with it.

Tragically, mental health problems are common for “arty” types. High creativity often comes with a price tag.

Yes and theres all too many in this isolated, materialistic, secular society we have. Ironic isnt it? There have never been as many people, the means of communication have never been faster or wider, and yet the art of conversation is dying and people are “lonely”.

Thank you for adding something different to the thread. I’m in agreement with you. She struggles with demons. I do, too. Who doesn’t to one extent or the other? And she does have talent.
