They Loved Your G.P.A. Then They Saw Your Tweets.

At Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Me., admissions officers are still talking about the high school senior who attended a campus information session last year for prospective students. Throughout the presentation, she apparently posted disparaging comments on Twitter about her fellow attendees, repeatedly using a common expletive.

Perhaps she hadn’t realized that colleges keep track of their social media mentions.

“It was incredibly unusual and foolish of her to do that,” Scott A. Meiklejohn, Bowdoin’s dean of admissions and financial aid, told me last week. The college ultimately denied the student admission, he said, because her academic record wasn’t competitive. But had her credentials been better, those indiscreet posts could have scuttled her chances.

Better to keep your Twitter account shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.

If they discover that you are a conservative, say bye bye to that college of your dreams.

Actually she sounds like she would fit right in at Bowdoin. May even have a career on the faculty.

They need a Miranda statement for Twitter and FB.

“Anything you say here can and will be used against you”.

At least use an alias.

When applying to college, can your political opinions (posted on social sites) affect your potential acceptance?

Are the Universities now the biggest threat to free speech?

A Constitutional Amendment may be needed to actually define and protect privacy from 1) Government 2) Businesses 3) Healthcare 4) Non-for profit.

You have to assume everything you put out electronically will be read. It also is out there forever. So co-eds should think twice before they consider doing a porn shoot for pin money.

Hey look! Is that grandma?

Hence one of the major reasons I do NOT get involved on the social media garbage sites.

I don’t get how a supposedly tech-savvy generation that has grown up with the internet, FB, twitter and the like all their lives can be so tech-stupid.

There is very little you can’t find on the internet these days, and nothing you post out there ever really goes away. Using something as simple as the Internet Wayback Machine, I’ve found posts I’ve made on sites as far back as 1996.

I coach a youth sports team. I have incorporated Tweets and Facebook postings into my pre-season player and parent talk. Parents appreciate it and the kids are starting to understand that doing stupid things like posting how much you like or dislike something is permanent.

Translation: We would have admitted her but disqualified her for her tweets, but due to the litigious nature of the USA, we can’t say that so we stand by the statement above.

I don’t have Twitter. I get enough grief for the relatively mild stuff I post here.

As a parent, I am finding it difficult to keep up with the latest technologies and trends with social media. But we are working very hard to convince our children to NOT post anything of any importance or relevance on social channels.
