How the 'fortress of fundamentalism' handles sexual assault

ydia still doesn’t know why she was expelled from Bob Jones University in March 2009. But she believes it has something to do with the fact that she was raped.

Lydia, who asked to be identified by only her first name, loved BJU, a Christian university in Greenville, S.C., when she started there in the fall of 2008. Pursuing a nursing major, she enjoyed the classes, played intramural sports and had a great group of friends. Then, when she went home over Christmas break, she says she was raped by an acquaintance.

For weeks, Lydia didn’t tell anybody about it, or talk much at all. Then, a friend noticed that she was acting strangely, and Lydia admitted why. The friend wasn't sure what to do, so asked an old roommate, Rebekah, who was a few years older, a BJU dorm counselor and graduate student. Rebekah wasn't sure what to do, and so arranged a meeting with the dean of students.

After all, the administration states clearly in the student handbook: "You may come to any of us for help in any area of your life. We are your brothers and sisters in Christ."

Lydia desperately didn’t want to go.

Good old Al Jazeera America. Reporting on the “bad” along with the coverup “good”.

I miss Pravda and Tass.

BJU is sinister and corrupt. This is not the first instance like this, and won’t be the last as long as people are gullible enough to buy their lies.

Morgana, you don’t have any input?

I just reread the article, it doesn’t say anything, nothing at all.

The anonymous woman was supposedly raped, while she was at home during Christmas break, not at the University, not by a person from the University just some guy in her hometown, she never filed a crime report , or anything, and the Muslims wrote a very long article condemning the Christians.

Yea here’s my input. If a man tells me he’s a grad from Bob Jones U. I run the opposite direction as fast as I can.

It’s hard to get a good read on a story like this, especially from a biased source.

Maybe this girl was raped, and then was pushed into using the dean of a college as a therapist. That makes absolutely no sense to me, but that seems to be the story we are supposed to believe. And that the rapist is texting her, and she hasn’t reported that either. And she gets expelled but by having her mother mysteriously show up in the middle of the night to take her away. Which is also rather unbelievable, unless there is some other great tragedy going on between her and her parents. I mean, who is paying for this college education?

One possible interpretation that could be gleaned from the article: A girl who was at a university where dating of any kind is frowned upon and touching is forbidden gets into it with a guy from her hometown. Somebody eventually figured out what she had done, and knowing it would get her expelled, she decided to say it was not consensual. The school is wondering why she brought up a rape to the dean, instead of reporting it to police. So they investigate, and find that the girl not only didn’t report it, or go to the hospital to get checked out, or tell her parents, or her friends, but she is still having conversations with her rapist.

So they decide that, all things considered, it is more likely that she has violated the school policy, and they expel her.

Or the truth could really be somewhere else entirely.

People have a hard time talking about rape, because you can’t talk about it — if a girl says she was raped, you have to accept that and be all for her whatever she does, whether she reports it or not, or still hangs out with the rapist or not, or can’t identify anything about it, or acts like nothing is wrong, whatever she does, you just are NOT allowed to say anything at all about it. Which is why we are stuck with “20% of females were raped or had an attempted rape”.

Or it could be that the evil christians just care so much about their silly 10 commandments and all and wanting to be pure and holy and live a life worthy of the calling, that they should be banished from a polite society.

This university has had problems for years. Lots of sex abuse being covered up. Yea I know why al jazzera is covering this, they want the heat off the a-rabs for a change and quite frankly they could not have picked a better target.

You know and I know all major universities cover up the amount of rapes that occur on campus. If parents only knew how much it happens they would never let their little girl go there. It is ten times worse when a so called christian university does it and then blames the victim. This not Bob Jones’ first time at doing this, in fact I would consider them a christain taliban. No wonder al jazzera repoted this it’s up their alley.

According to the article, nothing is being covered up, it is just a Muslim and whatever you are, propaganda piece.

This rape that appears never to happened, had nothing to do with the “campus” or the university.

according to this article she was raped and then kicked off campus.

Funny her rapists were not kicked too. Wonder why that is? Oh wait according to Fundies women “can’t be raped”.

LOL, read your own Christian hating, Muslim hit piece.

She went home for vacation and was supposedly raped in her home town, in whatever state that was, by someone that she knew or was dating there, it had nothing to do with Bob Jones University, or any of it's students, aside from her.

Back wherever in the nation she was supposedly raped, she hadn't gone to the hospital or called the cops, or ever turned in the supposed rapist, who was her acquaintance.

You know and I know all major universities cover up the amount of rapes that occur on campus.

How would I know that? I'm not a woman who got raped on a campus that had that rape covered up. My daughter has not informed me of a single person she knows who got raped, for whom the school somehow covered it up.

And how does a school "cover up" the rapes? If a rape is reported to police, that report is public. Any person, including a reporter, can get that information, which will include where the rape was reported.

So anybody can generate a report any time they want of how many rapes occur at a school, and there is nothing the school can do about it. At worst, the school could punish people for making reports, but that isn't going to last very long before they are so vilified for doing so that any possible benefits of trying to suppress reporting would be overwhelmed by the negative publicity.

So how am I supposed to "know" that "all major universities" cover up rape? I don't even see how they could. And worse, if I could "know" it, that would simply prove they weren't covering them up. If they successfully cover them up, we won't know about them, and won't know they are covering up.

All we have to suggest a cover-up is generic anonymous surveys that claim to find large numbers of people being raped or assaulted, who don't report this to any authority or to the press.

So, if someone IS covering up rapes, it is the rape victims themselves. They are the only ones who can hide that a rape happened, as we see in this story where the claimed rape victim didn't report it and didn't tell anybody about it until someone else at the school started asking her about her changed demeanor.

Why should I blame "major universities" for women who are raped refusing to report the attacks? It's not like the women have to report through the university and the university is hiding the reports.

As for your claim that "This is not Bob Jones' first time at doing this", the article doesn't even CLAIM that there was a rape at the university. The rape occured at the victim's home town, and has NOTHING TO DO WITH the university. The only involvement with the university is the bizarre story that this girl decided to report her rape NOT to police, or to her family, or to local medical authorities, but instead went to the DEAN of her school to tell her story.

If there is one good message from this story, it is this: If you are raped or assaulted, tell someone who can do something about it, not the dean of your university. The Dean is not your counselor, or your personal law enforcement officer, or your friend or comforter.
