Parents Get 'Bullied' Children Plastic Surgery

It is common for kids to be teased or bullied for their physical features. Some parents nowadays, instead of teaching their child to love themselves for who they are, are changing their child's physical appearance to prevent bullying.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons said plastic surgery has grown 30% in the past decade. In 2008, 160,283 children under 18 had surgery, and 76,000 surgeries were performed on teenagers in 2011.

Many children undergo surgery to fix features that cause health problems, such as cleft palates or serious deformities. For example, in 2009, then-eight-year-old Ryan Cunningham of New York state was born with two perfectly good ears but only had one outer ear. His parents took him to a surgeon and attached an ear to his head.

However, Dr. Donn Chatham, plastic surgeon in Louisville, KY and president of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, said the majority of kids who desire the surgeries "are otherwise healthy kids looking to improve an awkward but functional feature, such as a large nose or small breasts."

The parents in these cases approve Botox injections, laser hair removal, breast augmentations, pinning back big ears, and removing moles.

Little Baby Face Foundation was established in 2002 to provide for children with severe deformities like Cunningham, but they recently branched out to cover minor surgeries. In 2011, seven-year-old Samantha Shaw received a free surgery from the foundation to pin back her ears. She told "Good Morning America" she was not even teased about her ears. Her mother said kids and parents asked her "hurtful" questions about Samantha's ears, and she opted to have the surgery to prevent bullying. More parents are opting for surgery to prevent any possible future problems.

WTH? One of my brothers had the most dumbo ears ever......my parents said God loved his ears so stop complaining.
He did have surgery when he became a firefighter and the tips of his ears kept burning......not because he was bullied.
(OK, with six sisters and a brother to “talk” to bullies it may not have been a real issue”, so never mind)

We had a girl in our school with a huge mole on her cheek. She was never bullied - she was actually quite popular. Her parents finally found a surgeon that could deal with it when she was a sophomore and had it removed.

The transformation was incredible and she looked amazing. We were all shocked at how much that mole had taken away from her. She felt 100% better about herself and it was a good thing.

The parents in these cases approve Botox injections, laser hair removal, breast augmentations, pinning back big ears, and removing moles.

Considering that a mole can become cancerous, removing them can be classified as a preventative health measure. However, the rest of those procedures--why? What are those parents thinking?

I've never had plastic surgery...but wish I had....but now that I'm 60, its a pretty much moot point...

Botox people better be careful with...it only lasts 3 months, is very expensive and once you start you have to continue...

I don’t see anything wrong with surgery to remove a mole or even laser treatments to remove excess facial hair, breast augmentation, on the hand…

“His parents took him to a surgeon and attached an ear to his head.”

Who wrote this, one of the school children in the story?

Er, your info on Botox is a bit misleading, not incorrect, just a bit misleading.

I had a few Botox injections between my brow and above my eyebrows to help with deepening frown lines caused by severe headaches.

Not only did the lessen those deepening lines but reduced my headaches as well.

The doctor said that Botox effects diminish with time, so I wasn't under the illusion that the effects were permanent. To my surprise, the lasted more than six months and disappeared so gradually that one hardly noticed and the serious lines have yet to return. My headaches have lessened as well.

Botox is used for a number of medical reasons but also for cosmetic reasons and can soften the appearance and diminish frown lines.

I've had a second treatment recently, two years since the first.

I grew up in a town that had become mostly wealth Conservative and Reform Jews. All the Jewish thirteen year old girls came back to school with a new nose in 8th grade.

Unless there’s a deformity, they I agree. A girls body needs to develop before any of that happens.

It’s too bad that we don’t teach our children to respect themselves before we sexualize them. Sad.
