ONTONAGON COUNTY, MI -- Jeff Powell stands over the dead gray wolf, a smile spreading across his face beneath his hunters orange cap. Wildlife officials are removing a pre-molar tooth from the canines upper right jaw, to test for age.
The wolf is perhaps 80 pounds, a male, its jaw a jagged row of ripping power that equals as much as 1,500 pounds of force per square inch twice a German Shepherds.
It is one of just two wolves recorded taken on the first day of Michigans first managed hunt a testament to the wariness of the prey.
Powell was hunting deer near here, as he has off and on since 1995. But he had one of 1,200 wolf licenses to shoot wolves.
He used it not far from the Black River in nearby Gogebic County at 10 a.m. Friday, from a deer blind along ridge lines by a cedar swamp.
I just used a coyote caller a couple times just in case, said Powell, 38, of Elkton in Huron County. I knew bear hunters had had a lot of problems with wolves in that area
There are five people in his hunting party. Four had both deer and wolf licenses. We havent really been up here for deer recently, because there havent been many. We actually see more wolf sign than we do deer. But when the opportunity to hunt wolves came up, we decided to give it a try.

The comments after the article are interesting. Are the wolves a threat to themselves, livestock, or other domesticated animals?
The casual observer would say the wolves are threat and have been so since man came to the area. The religion of the ecotards says that they are part of mother earth and they belong and that men should move away form them. Some of the ecotards say that the earth should not even be scratched by man.
Some of the ecotards say that the earth should not even be scratched by man.
Those ecotards need to scratch themselves off the face of the earth.
If I lived in the area of those wolves I would have a couple of Irish Wolfhounds on my property to deal with them properly.
The ecotards are running ads claiming that wolves don’t take livestock or threaten children and are virtually non existent.
While there aren’t a lot of livestock on the upper peninsula they wolves have decimated the deer. For 2 wolves to be taken on the opening day tells me there must be a fair number of wolves out there.
I read that the other hunter from Rives Junction asked not to be named because he was getting death threats just for getting the license.
This makes me want to go out and have scrambled endangered sea turtle eggs for breakfast.
You have to remember that eco-tards and all the other assorted collectivists are tyrants and predators. It’s makes complete sense why these human predators would want to bring back these animal predators.
Release Ted Nugent into the wild and wolves will no longer be a problem-o! :)

Liberals have a built in need to manipulate other people and force their ideas on others. This is why they seem to have taken over the government. They see their chance to become dictators. Conservatives have a more live and let live philosophy unfortunately. I do see a great backlash because the liberals have attacked so much of the country and have riled up so many sectors of the country.
I'd hate to meet more than one out there........
A couple years back when we were fighting over legalizing a hunt one of the native tribal officials weighed in and slapped the econazis hard.
He said that native respect for nature didn’t mean they simply let nature walk all over them and they killed wolves pretty much every chance they got. He pointed out that wolves were a competitive predator to the natives and they were a threat to their children.
There is plenty of room in the upper peninsula for wolves to exist away from people and hunting is a way of keeping them away from people.
Beau finally got a tag this season, but the only two he saw were beside the highway on the way Up Nort’.
He’s bummin’ that he didn’t get one - and that guy can track ANYTHING. I’m hoping for a Coyote Hat from him for Christmas. :)
“I do see a great backlash because the liberals have attacked so much of the country and have riled up so many sectors of the country.”
I’m hoping for a bloodbath come 2014. If not, I’m totally Going Galt. :)
We’re overrun with coyotes here in southern Michigan and they get as big as this guy’s wolf was.
They were really yipping last night around the edges of town.
I have quite the pack here, too. They’re pretty active in the fall. My Lab regularily wakes me up at 2am so she can patrol the perimeter.
We own property in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan. Wolves were "re-introduced" by the DNR in one of the dumbest acts of of managing natural resources I've ever seen in our area.
At least where our property is, we hardly ever see a deer anymore. We see plenty of coyotes and wolves, hardly any deer.
Twenty-five to thirty years ago we could count the deer up by us in the hundreds on any given day in one of the hayfields up the road. Now? Maybe twenty.
Between the "re-introduction" of the wolves, the burgeoning coyote population and the State of Michigan's greed in creating all these different deer hunting seasons (read that: "hunting license revenue") starting in the early fall and going through January, they've pretty much wiped out the deer population in our area.
Stupid bastards.
