The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

This is greeneyes’ daughter. I have lost the password to my account, but I told my mom that I would post here for her so that no one would worry about her.
She went to the eye doctor today, and they dilated her pupils. She is not supposed to drive for a couple more hours. So, she is cruising around the Super WalMart, where the vision center is, trolling for Christmas present ideas.
She will return to her regularly scheduled garden thread later tonight.

Thanks, Johnny, I wondered why we didn’t have a new thread. We will have to pass a law among us that greeneyes can never leave her house from about noon on Friday until about 11 p.m..

My feral tobacco plant is growing like it had good sense. In fact, I need to repot it to a larger pot tomorrow. This thing may survive until spring.

Do you have any experience growing Elderberry Trees from Seeds? Do you know if it is normal for them to produce true, without grafting?
Same for Chokeberry bushes from seed?
I am considering adding some for food for our quail. The population is very low because of the drought. It will take some time to rebuild.

Fireants have hit the quail population pretty hard, too. I don't remember the last time I flushed a covey when out walking. When I was a kid, I did all the time.

That’s a shame. Quail are delicious.
I am so glad you have that. It will sterilize any water you find down to muddy water in a ditch. Use regular coffee big filters to filter out as much dirt/gunk as possible, then put it through your Berkey and it’s pure.
Did not know about the fire ants harming quail.
We have fire ants, but not terribly bad. At least not in our tight land farms. In sandy land farms it seems worse.
When I was growing up, we were serious quail hunters. I remember my father hunting almost every day. One of the last years I was home before moving away after college, he hunted 47 of the 54 day season. He had a great English pointer, a really smart animal.
My plan is to have early spring food to eat and mid-summer to eat and fall/winter to eat. Will it happen - who knows?
Here are the seeds:
Tokyo Cross Hybrid Turnip - 35 days to eating them - got them because they are an early spring crop and are still good ones to plant in fall. They can be harvested when two inches across.
Tomato Fourth of July Hybrid - ripens here in June to eat.
Also have some cherries that are really early.
Tomato Better Boy Hybrid - 72 days to eating
Tomato Burpees Long Keeper - 78 days to eating for me in fall then wrapping the tomatoes to last six to twelve weeks.
That's the plan but figure in too much rain, not enough rain, too much sun, not enough sun, etc., etc.. and hope I get some tomatoes at some time and some of the veggies I plant actually produce.
I really hate having my eyes dilated. Every time I go to the eye doctor, i make some excuse as to why they can’t do it day (Riding the Harley home, Too Sunny, etc etc)
I suppose i shall have to submit to it sooner or later!
A few days ago I received a catalogue from Johnny’s Selected Seeds. I plan to spend some time looking at my options for next spring, and I hope that this season I will be able to start my seeds much earlier. This season, seeds for cherry tomatoes and jalapenos are definitely in, along with lots of basil and chives. Not so many summer squash, because we had so many last summer that I grew sick of them. Some parsley and cilantro are musts.
