LAGUNA BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Police in Orange County Tuesday were asking for the public’s help in recovering a stolen bike worth $10,000.

The Scott Genius 710 bike was stolen on the night of Nov. 23 from the back of a pickup truck parked in the underground garage of the Inn at Laguna.

“The bicycle is a custom build, and all paint and decals are custom,” Det. Matt Meadows said.

Anyone with information on the bike’s whereabouts should contact Laguna Beach police at (949) 497-0701.

My first thought as well. Reminds me of Eddie Murphy in “48 Hours”...

“You’re too stupid to have a job!”

Seriously. If you own a $10K bicycle, and you haven’t got a way to secure it, you either have too much money and the loss of the bike means nothing, or you are too careless to own something valuable.

It would be nice if there were no criminals, but...given that there are,you have to take responsibility for your own possessions.

If I paid $10,000 for a “bike”, it better have a big a s s motor on it.....

I said when I turned 16 and got my driver’s license, I’d NEVER peddle anything the rest of my life...I’m 65 and so far, I’ve held true to that....

I loved my Giant TCR carbon. That bike probably saved my life. I T boned a fallen rider at 30 MPH whose tire had rolled. The frame snapped in three places and I went vertical landing on top of the bike. Walked away with a tiny scratch on my heel.
That TCR handled well and seemed to anticipate my climbing power shifting from leg to leg while out of the saddle.
However, The DI2 on my S Works Venge.....MMMMMMMMMM
Fast....very fast! I love the Speed!

“a $5 can of spraypaint will have it looking like a mountain bike from WalMart in no time at all”

I stripped all the stickers off my 2nd hand WalMart mountain bike and it looks kind of like the $10K bike.

I just don’t see 10k worth of bike there.

The bike was $100. The custom decals and paint was $9,900.

Back in the 1970’s we bought a brand new three bedroom two bath house for $15,000 and worried at the time about spending so much money. I just can’t imagine someone spending $10,000 for just a bike. Says something about some of the people today. But then again it’s bigger boys with bigger and more expensive toys.

“Probably stolen by an obama supporter — maybe even one of his sons.”

The bike owner is probably an Obama supporter who does not believe in knockout games or Obama’s sons stealing stuff Probably has a sticker o the truck to make sure he announced that he was a useful idiot.

Unless you ride a lot of off road rocky trails and long climbs, you won't feel a difference. If you are just cruising around railtrails and roads, it doesn't matter. Off road, it is a beast.

Usually those bikes are the realm of sponsored racers, not everyday mountain bikers.

Okay — I'll put it in terms most on this board can understand — It is like asking what is the difference between a .338 Lapua vs. a Mosin in competition shooting?

That would be true. But that house is still standing and in excellent condition even after almost forty years. I still have my old pink Schwinn bike from back then too. No gears and not fancy but it does get me around the neighborhood. Each to his own, at least for a bit longer.

I’m sure that there is some hard working “immigrant” who is pedaling around the town much easier now thanks to “donation” of this bike.

We sold the house after five years because the racial composition was changing and the schools were no longer the quality of those in adjoining counties. But we did drive by the house just for grins about three years ago when we were visiting in the area. There was a home nearby for sale somewhat similar to the one we had and it was listed for $75,000 so over the years the area has shown some increase in value but not like that of surrounding counties.

There's a constant market for stolen bikes. Ufortunately, that market doesn't know the difference between a $10,000 custom bike and a $200 Walmart special. It'll be sold for $50, the money going to buy drugs. The new owner will be an illegal immigrant who can't afford a car but needs transportation.

A couple of weeks ago I saw a middle-aged Hispanic guy, looking like he was going to work at a restaurant, riding a very expensive Italian racing bike. It was pretty clear he had no idea what he had there.
