Anaheim City Council Recognizes OC Busboy Who Returned $5K To 90-Year-Old Customer

ANAHEIM (CBSLA.com) — A busboy who found an envelope with $5,000 in a restaurant bathroom and returned it to its rightful owner last month was recognized by the Anaheim City Council Tuesday.

Felipe Perez stumbled upon a white envelope with the $5,000 inside on the floor of a bathroom stall he was cleaning during his shift at Keno’s Restaurant on La Palma Avenue.

The father of four never thought twice about what he had to do.

“It truly speaks to this gentleman’s character and I am truly, truly proud to be able to recognize him along with the mayor and city council members tonight,” Deputy Chief Raul Quezada of the Anaheim Police Department said.

Warren Bloom, 90, had an early dinner at Keno’s on Nov. 13 and dropped a white envelope of money in the restroom. Bloom had withdrawn the money after a scam artist tried to get him to send cash to South America.

Bloom never followed through, and instead had the bills tucked in his shirt.

Near tears, Perez told CBS2′s Michele Gile last month that his only option was to return the money.

“It was not my money. I’m not gonna keep it,” he said.

Perez became an instant celebrity at Keno’s as news spread about his good deed, with strangers dropping off gifts for Perez at the restaurant.

“He’s got some fan mail as well, people sending thank you notes, and maybe some other little things to congratulate him,” said Steve Cooper, Keno’s owner. “So it’s really been a whirlwind.”

Warren Bloom and Felipe Perez met for the first time November 15.

“You know I saw my money flying away,” Bloom told Perez. “But there are good people in this world, and you’re one of them.”

"It was not my money. I’m not gonna keep it,” he said.

Operative words.

It's such a shame that the proper moral perspective is so unusual these days that it warrants a news story.

People like this may be the only reason we haven’t met the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah yet.

Minor detail, but since it was cash in a white envelope, how did Perez know whose money it was?

Bravo to Mr Perez, God is smiling down on him.

Character if often hidden. In this case, it showed. Someone give this guy a good job because he is the kind of employee you need.

What kind of person accidentally leaves $5000 in a restaurant bathroom? Good for this busboy to have nothing to do with this sort of cash.

His daughter-in-law had talked him out of falling for the scam. She dined with him at the restaurant the night he lost the envelope. When he missed it, she returned the restaurant and discovered that Perez had found it.

The lesson here is treat your help respectfully. I’ve seen the opposite, and when an object was lost, it wouldn’t be returned, not out of greed, but out of spite.

The kind of man who is 90 years old, fell for a scam and withdrew the money from his account. Having changed his mind he had the money in his shirt, which dropped out on the bathroom floor. But I regurgitate what was in the article. That kind of man and money.

People in their 80s and 90s do things like this all the time...

This one was very fortunate and got his money back, in part thanks to his daughter-in-law .

My post was too abbreviated, ooops.

I was thinking, "If I were an employee and happened upon a big chunk of cash like that, in a bathroom, not knowing why..."

I wouldn't want anything to do with it, but also would wonder what kind of person or situation would cause five grand to be left in a bathroom.

I sure wouldn't think, "Windfall". Heh, more like, "Yikes, do not want".

I did not realize that this was not all that uncommon with the elderly.

“Yikes, do not want”.

Agreed. I would expect a sting or a drug buy and would walk out making it very clear I did NOT take it.

Reminds me of the scene in Quick Change with Randy Quaid’s character telling Grimm (Bill Murray), “You just ripped off the mob”. LOL, oops.

If I saw an envelop on the floor of a restroom stall I'd need a HazMat suit before I even thought about touching it. My Mom didn't raise any dummies.
