I've been trying to figure it out for years, without much success. It's not just one thing. There's a combination of factors: "survivor's guilt" in some cases, a misplaced identification with the downtrodden in others, a trans-generational trust in government to protect them from people who pose no threat but who they still fear because their ancestors sometimes blamed Jews for Jesus' death. And yet, they know who they really need to fear, but feel guilty about it. It's a soup of anxieties, like borscht, but not as satisfying.
