You know, I don’t know HOW well JRRT did...
But I know his friendship with C.S. Lewis informed them both (read http://www.christianitytoday.com/ch/news/2003/aug29.html?start=1). I also understand they were contemporaries with other writing legends and went to salons where they would practice debates on a wide variety of subjects.
What a golden age that was!
