I always find it fascinating that we cheer for such a random jackpot winner.

But someone who makes it rich by hard work and ingenuity? Too many Americans resent that success story, I imagine because it makes them feel more like failures for not having done the same than does the lottery winner.

In Canada, lottery winnings are tax exempt. There was a story earlier this week of a now retired Calgary businessman who won a $40 million prize earlier this year. He is donating the whole amount to charity, likely the Canadian Cancer Society and the Tom Baker Cancer Clinic in Calgary. The history of lottery winners who struck it big with hundreds of millions of dollars in winnings has not been a tale of living happily ever after...

And the history is still being written on all the Detroit public servants with hundreds of millions in pension dollars (ie, Union winnings), and how that payout will turn out...

I would have first moved to Texas or Guam or some other state that has no income tax before telling anyone I won money.

The Georgia Lottery Corp. is required, by statute, to comply with Georgia’s Open Records Act. Pursuant to the Georgia Open Records Act, a prize winner’s name, city, county, and state of residence, and the amount of the prize won shall be regarded as matters of public record.

I know her! She's my long lost cousin, I swear!

Wasn't she your twin sister, separated at birth at the hospital and take by the Gypsies?

I think most people are realists who know that the only way they could ever live a lifestyle like that is to have it given to them, perhaps acknowledging deep down inside that they will never have the brains or the drive to become wealthy by any other means.

Frivolous lawsuits are another quick way for many dreamers.

Little Orphan Annie getting adopted by Daddy Warbucks back when that cartoon was popular played on exactly the same thing.

Out of $324 Million she gets 120 Milllion. The Government gets more than she does. Not a bad scam for the Government.

When the mafia ran the numbers they didn’t steal near that much. In fact I always got paid the whole amount.

If you bought the ticket in your home state then keep dreaming, they would be after you within minutes when they see your moving date for back taxes.

"Winning the Mega Millions is akin to getting struck by lightning at the same time you're being eaten by a shark," said Todd Northrop, founder of Lotterypost.com

Or Obama taking blame...Well OK, maybe those odds are a little *too* astronomical.

I would have no difficulty saying "no" to moochers, particularly strangers.

In fact, I'd relish the opportunity.

I got the mega ball and one number...

I don't know if different states have different lower level payouts, but in Ohio that would be worth $2. Assuming that they are on the same line. Even if they aren't, the mega ball alone would be worth $1.

There was a story recently about a guy who won $10,000,000. Gave every dime away.
