We had a ‘69 Mercury Cougar.

I don’t even know what a muscle car is but that Cougar was terrific.

I owned a ‘66 Chevy with the L-78 396 “rat motor.”

The car was the ultimate sleeper. White walls, auto on the floor. Full mufflers and resonators.

It got 8 miles per gallon of premium gas.

I learned too late that these big GM engines didn't like high rpms.

A muscle car is an American-made two door coupe, generally manufactured from 1964 - 1972, with a high performance V8 engine. Some Mercury Cougars would be considered muscle cars.

Nice stuff, but I always thought those Roadrunners with the tall spoilers were about the stupidest looking cars to come out of that era.

A high school buddy owned a ‘65 Goat.
It was the quickest thing in the state, I think.

Naw, this was a Dodge/Plymouth thing. Remember some guy i H.S. had s Super Stock car sponsored by an auto parts store. He'd bring it to school now and then, thin aluminum fenders and all. Apparently a special factory car set up for drag racing.

They were made street legal so they could be run in NASCAR. Those tall spoilers might have been silly on the street but they served a purpose on a NASCAR track.

"I learned too late that these big GM engines didn't like high rpms. "

Shoulda got a Pontiac instead of the Chevy! I had both, and my Pontiacs always seemed to hold up a little better.
