"Best" states to buy insurance in?
12/23/13 | self

One week ago, we got a letter from NJ Horizon BCBS saying our current plan qualified under the Affordable Care Act.

Today, we got a letter saying they were discontinuing our plan in April. Their "Bronze" Plan substitute , not covering our oldest two children, would cost 50% more, or 17K per year, and requires a 50% copay for specialists, and a 50% copay on drugs (the old plan didn't cover drugs.) We can't afford it. We barely can afford the old one. And I guess "Bronze" means "Lose your home and go bankrupt if you get cancer, but, hey, your oldest two can go on the government teat."

Going without insurance means being charged far more for tests and procedures - like an $800 mammogram instead of the insurance company-negotiated rate of $150.

We've been planning to move out of NJ - this is accelerating our timetable. Is there any state where

1) you can buy a a relatively decent catastrophic plan, one that doesn't have a low cap, like 100K, because that's not catastrophic

2) you can set up a largish tax-exempt health care savings plan

3) there are some requirements for transparency in health care pricing, so you can find out before you have a procedure what it will cost?

I just can't say what I want to say about the people who got us in this mess, and the people profiteering off this mess. Ban-worthy, FBI and SS attention-getting, unChristian.

Agree 1000%. Has potential to be worse than Pearl Harbor for the horrific negative affect on Americans’ finances, moral, health, freedom , etc.

Probably SC. The first state to ban obamacare.

Just an FYI you can negotiate with medical service providers. I have done so even for emergency surgery. I think obamacare has so messed up the system any medical providers would be happy to negotiate for services if you pay cash. I wish I had a solution for catastrophic protection but since obamacare cancelled all those plans I don’t know what to do.

Is there any state where ...
Can't really answer your question, but you can try plugging in different zip codes at Health Sherpa and comparing plan costs.
Don't forget, when it asks you for your annual income to see if you're eligible for a subsidy, just follow the Øbama(no)Care navigator's instructions and lie.

The very issue they claimed to be fixing, namely folks being bankrupted by a bout of serious illness, is the one they’ve now made it financially impossible for many Americans to insure against. Sheer genius.

The most despicable aspect of this entire power move by Obama and the so-called "progressive" regressives is the thousands and thousands of Stage IV Cancer patients who have been traumatized by the cruelty of the Democrats in designing of ACA's rules in order to take away the very insurance policies which have been allowing aggressive treatment for their disease!

Patients and their families, right at Thanksgiving and Christmas, have been faced with the agony of knowing that lives may be shortened because of the votes of each Democrat who first voted for the Bill, and then voted against the 2010 Republican legislation to prevent the cancellations.

Each Democrat should be called to account for hurting even one brave American who has battled cancer and is now experiencing fear and hurt because of politicians cowardly and coercive actions on behalf of a leader who cares for nothing but power and forcing ideological change in America.

Don’t buy any insurance. Pay for your doctors and meds, and make sure you don’t overpay your income tax withholding so they can’t collect the fines. You don’t need catastrophic insurance, because if you get really sick you can buy a gold plan, and your preexisting condition won’t matter.

Kansas. I have saved $450 a month moving from my COBRA to Non-ObamaCare through the Kansas Non-ObamaCare exchange. P.S. Cost for 1 on Medicare with supplemental and 1 not, less than $250 a month.

Healthsherpa does not have all the plans. The best thing to do is to go to the individual health insurance company websites, themselves.

Is that really true? Just wait until you are sick and buy insurance. Surely there must be some restrictions.

That’s my understanding. Of course conservatives have been pointing out this flaw all along.
