Sentimental films make you more liberal, research suggests.

Political scientists found that Hollywood movies are better able to change attitudes – in a left-wing direction – than advertising or news reports.

Todd Adkins, of the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, said audiences seemed to turn off their critical faculties when they reach the cinema.

Thank you! Yet another reason to avoid chick-flicks!

How amazing that political scientists would find that sentimental films make you more liberal. I have seen great sentimental films all my life , not that pap that they use as examples(except it’s a wonderful life) and I’m as far from liberal as you can get. Pure bolshevik!

I’ve watched As Good As It Gets several times and have yet to cry but I do still LOL especially when Jack riffs the “Sailor wanna Hump hump” line.

And sadly, those critical faculties stayed turned off even when they enter the voting booth as the last 2 Presidential elections attest to.

As Good As It Gets didn't make me liberal but it did make me cringe when fat, sloppy and 60ish Jack Nicholson romanced slim, toned and 30ish Helen Hunt.

I like “It’s a Wonderful Life,” and that didn’t make me a liberal. By the way, Mr. Potter, the banker, is more similar to George Soros than and conservative I know. George Bailey is the embodiment of conservatism.

The first time I watched AGAIG I pegged it for the pink propaganda it actually is. It's clearly a caricature of what the movie makers perceive as your typical straight man.

Hollywood can't conceive of a reasonable person taking a rational assessment of homosexuality and concluding that it's a universally destructive force in any culture.

Rainmaker has always been one of my favorite movies.

Katharine Hepburn is a huge casting mistake.

But Burt Lancaster gives what can practically be called a performance of his career! He’s brilliant!

Chick flicks emasculate you. I know, I’ve had girlfriends “threaten” me if I don’t watch films such as Sex in The City, PS I love You, Letters to Juliet and all that crap, and I still say no. When I said “threaten” means threatened to withhold sex.

I’m a big Nicholson fan, and I positively despised AGAIG. I almost fell asleep halfway through. The movie would have been a lot better if Jack would have stayed a misanthropic hater all the way through the flick. I saw the liberal bent early on.

Men hate chick flicks because they represent what men most hate about life...a bunch of people sitting around whining about their problems. Would men like to watch movies about men sitting around whining about their wives? I doubt it. Unless there’s some shooting, car chases, explosions, gratuitous nudity (not involving naked men), most men stay far away from relationship movies. Which is what most chick flicks are...women sitting around commiserating and feeling sorry for themselves. And in today’s chick flicks, if there’s a prominent male, he’s of the liberal, emasculated sort.

Not too crazy about so-called chick flicks, but I’ve watched a few - usually to appease the GF.

I don’t see that they’ve made me appreciably liberal in outlook; don’t political scientists have anything better to do than engage in this sort of frivolity?

BINGO. Men don’t listen to other men’s problems..they solve it. My mentality is, I have problems of my own so why should I listen to yours? I think I remembered one of my ex saying ‘Ok, if you watch Sex In the City 2” with me, I’ll watch your stupid Dark Knight movie with you”. Thought about it, but the price I pay is too high LOL

Tear -jerkers can turn you towards liberalism?
Boy is that a stretch.Anything to recruit you into there ranks.
Next they’ll be saying you’re most likely to be a racist if you prefer white bread.

I tried that out - no effect.

Fight Club
The Great Escape
Predator
Gladiator
Airplane
Braveheart
The Expendables
The Untouchables
Rambo
The Godfather
Dirty Harry
Deathwish
Taken

All about rescuing a kidnapped daughter, protecting family, community, country, loved ones, falling in love, and saving innocents. All sentimental, and all harmless.
