Doctors say next 48 hrs to determine ‘comatose’ Schumacher’s life

MELBOURNE: Doctors treating Formula One legend Michael Schumacher have said that the next 48 hours will determine the racing ace’s future, including if emergency surgery has saved his life or if he has suffered any long-term damage.
The seven-time F1 champion, who remains in an induced coma in a critical condition after he suffered internal bleeding and severe bruising to the brain when his head struck a rock during a high-speed off-piste ski run in the French Alps, is being watched around the clock by doctors and his family, who have maintained a bedside vigil.
According to Telegraph.com.au, doctors said that Schumacher was kept in a coma and in a state of hypothermia to give him the best chance to recover from the serious head trauma, with Professor Stephen Chabardes, the neurosurgeon who performed emergency surgery on the star, saying that Schumacher arrived in hospital in an agitated state.
Stating that they had been able to eliminate the ‘haemotoma’ ..

i think there is a scandal of sorts about skiing “off piste” which is not supposed to be done.
My he recover and thrive … and young wife and child.
I’m just sick about this tragic accident.
I just had to respond to your post in that to be fair, I’d guess there aren’t many spots on this planet where people don’t know who Michael Jordan is - there’s the ONE American sports figure that is truly global.
How terribly sad and tragic. I’ve kept him and his family in my prayers since learning of this terrible accident.

In the case of this incident they're using the term very loosely. Generally "off piste" refers to the back areas of the mountain which are ungroomed and seldom skied for obvious reasons.
If you look at the picture of where this guy fell, it's not really "off piste" but rather an area of the slope that's got a lot of rocks on it. It was the semi-fresh powder that probably enticed him to ski down it.....

‘Catapulted onto his head’
His manager, Sabine Kehm, recounted more details Tuesday of how the accident happened, gleaned from friends and family members who were present at the time.
The party was skiing in an area of deep snow when Schumacher helped a friend who had fallen, she said. As he set off again and went to make a turn, he seems to have hit a rock hidden under the snow.
This catapulted him into the air and he fell head down with all his weight onto another rock, she said, resulting in severe injuries to his head.
Schumacher was not traveling fast at the time, Kehm said, so those with him were initially shocked by how badly he was hurt. “It’s not a question of speed but of the angle that you hit the rock,” she said.
Kehm also cautioned against reading too much into the doctors’ latest report.
“They made it very clear that they are not optimistic, that ... there was a slight improvement compared to the situation yesterday, which doesn’t mean we can be optimistic yet,” she said. “It’s much too early to say.”
Kehm declined to comment on the emotional state of Schumacher’s family.
But she said “heartwarming” messages of support have come flooding in via e-mails, text messages and letters from people around the world.

Journalist dressed as priest tried to access Schumacher’s room
A journalist attempted to gain access to Michael Schumacher’s hospital room by dressing up as a priest, according to reports in Germany.
Schumacher is being treated at a hospital in Grenoble after falling and hitting his head on a rock while skiing at the French resort of Meribel. Media from around the world are at the hospital and Schumacher’s manager, Sabine Kehm, said one journalist attempted to gain access to the seven-time champion’s room.
“Apparently a journalist dressed as a priest had tried to gain access to Michael’s room,” Kehm told Die Welt. “I wouldn’t have ever imagined something like this could happen.”
The journalist and publication were not named.
In Tuesday’s press conference Gerard Saillant, one of the leading neurologists in Paris and a friend of Schumacher, asked the media to respect the need for the doctors to carry out their work without intrusion.
“I would like to ask you, in the name of Corinna, his wife, and all his family, not put pressure on the medical team, on the family and on us,” Saillant said. “They have work to do and I think the situation has to be the same as for everyone else. That is how you will be able to help Michael and how you will be able to help him win the this fight, which is a difficult one that has not been won yet.
“We are slightly less worried than we were yesterday, but you have to understand that this evening or tomorrow the situation can be reversed and therefore you have to allow the medical team to work. We will have another press conference if there is some news, if there is no news then don’t believe it is because we want to hide something, it is very simply because we are carrying out our daily work. I would like to thank you [the media] for the help that you can give us.”

Good grief
It is all that plus a repository of articles on Schumi. However, it makes me uneasy because it reads like the beginning of an obituary. I think the European media is on a death watch.
That was the dominant theory until The Stig revealed himself.
I was never a huge Schumi fan, nothing personal, just too typically bland Teutonic for my tastes, but I have no problem with him. I remember he was on Senna's wing that fateful day in 1994. Always seemed like a decent cat, hope he has a full recovery.
