Yup - except Glory should be number 1. Best representation of combat of any of them.

I am amazed that with the possible exception of Lincoln and Glory, better Civil War movies have not been made. The same can pretty much be said abou the American Revolution as well. Movies of both wars pale in comparison to the many quality war movies coming from WWI, WWII and Vietnam.

Note that this list was compiled before the 2012 Daniel Day-Lewis movie "Lincoln" was released. Based on acting performance I'd place "Lincoln" at the top of the list. Based on historical accuracy I wouldn't place it in the top 15. On the other hand most of the other movies on the list would fail the historical accuracy test as well.

I never watched Glory, it has Morgan Freeman in it and I just assumed it was a liberal OS, as for Cold Mountain I have the movie on DVD and have never been able to watch it.
Just cannot get through the thing, to me it sucks.

From a pure entertainment perspective, I would say Josey Wales and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly win hands down.

My favourite has always been The Horse Soldiers, but then again, I’m a big fan of The Duke. I like everything about that movie and have probably watched it about ten times.

Friendly Persuasion and Shenandoah for me. Not for the battle sequences, but for the human drama and the cost of war borne by families.

It’s a shame that Hollywood is too PC to make a movie of Turtledove’s “Guns for the South”.

Ride with the Devil and Major Dundee should be on the list.

CW 1 is more politicized than ever and tilted heavily in favor of the big government Leftist respective.
I would like to see a new film from the Southern perspective depicting the confederates and leadership in a more positive light; but I doubt that will ever happen in this country.

Ron Maxwell (Gettysburg, Gods & Generals) has a new Civil War movie that is also pretty darn good: Copperhead.

I didn't even know they had moving pictures back then. We had a magic lantern and we liked it.
