'Like a chainsaw going wild': Tucson man recounts vicious pit bull attack (Tuscon, Dogs of Peace)

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Blood dripped down the cabinets.

"They were within a minute of killing me," said John Bakker.

But the bloodshed was not caused by people.

"It was like trying to grab a chainsaw that was going wild,"said Bakker.

This was caused by pit bulls. Two to be exact, that viciously ripped into Bakker, as he took out his recycling Thursday afternoon. His next door neighbor had left his back gate open. Two pit bulls were out of control.

"I could see this arm right here was all torn up," said Bakker. "The flap of skull was down where I could see it in my eye."

A neighbor driving by managed to distract the dogs. Just enough time for Bakker to find refuge. Speckles of red inside the home lead to pools of blood in the kitchen.

"I was going to wash some of the blood away," said Bakker. "There was just too much, and I couldn't do that."

The injuries were severe. Bakker was losing blood and lots of it. The dogs bit into his head, ripped off his bicep down to the bone and tore through his fingers. His wife couldn't believe it.

"I kept thinking, I hope he's alive when I get there," said E.J Bakker.

Paramedics rushed John to the hospital, but the dogs were still on the loose. A neighbor called 911. TPD found the dogs in an alley. The pit bulls charged. The officer opened fire killing them.

"It really is a nightmare," said E.J. "I still can't believe it happened."

John tells 9OYS he feels lucky to be alive. His feelings for pit bulls forever changed.

"They're doing what comes natural," said John. "And that's what they were doing, a sneak attack and trying to kill me."

I watched the video at the link WARNING pools of blood in the kitchen...

The pit bull's owner faces misdemeanor charges: 2 counts of no dog license, 2 counts of no proof of vaccination and 2 counts of biting animal

Really hard to believe ripping his scalp down over one eye, "ripping the bicep off down to the bone" and almost killing him (if the dogs hadn't been distracted by a neighbor) results in misdemeanor charges. I am glad OTHER areas are beginning to bring heftier charges against people whose dogs do this kind of mayhem.

Must be a bit like what the North Korean Dear Leader’s uncle went through a few weeks ago.

I am a dog lover and I don’t give a rats-behind what pit-bull lovers tell me. These dogs can and will snap at any second. I’ve seen it.

I live in a really nice small town neighborhood. But the old lady across the street died and left the house to her granddaughter and her ex-con husband who have a pit bull chained in the backyard.

I always scan the horizon before going into the yard now and always carry (at least a 9mm Glock).

I have reported it to Animal Control but they say there is nothing they can do until there is a first bite.

I have cats. It will be tit for cat.;-)

For every dead cat...one chained up neighbor. I wouldn't dream of killing them.

That's too quick.

And BTW, for those of you who know me to be a devout Christian. Please help me before I...;-)

I have turned my other cheek 3 times so far.

This dog has chased my neighbor's kids such that they moved. He confronted me at my mail box (and I informed the owners), and he has chased another neighbor back to his house.

There is no possible excuse for keeping pit bulls in an urban or suburban area.

The problem is that they’re terriers. My Jack Russell is just as vicious as any pit bull when the kill instinct kicks in but he only weighs 10 or 12 lbs.

We had a serious 2 round fight in the living room last night between the Jack Russell and the Corgi mix and he was going for the kill.

"It was like trying to grab a chainsaw that was going wild,"

Well, that's the problem right there. Grabbing a chainsaw going wild is pretty dumb.

I weigh 220lbs, any dog weighing less than that is going down. When it gets tough, be the apex predator.

Push comes to shove, feed it your forearm then unscrew its neck like a mason jar. Been there done that. Dang glad I was wearing layers.

I didn’t know they are terriers, but you’ve hit the nail on the head. They problem isn’t that a Pit Bull can snap. Chihuahuas can snap and draw blood - seen it happen. Also I’ve had some nasty bites breaking up fights between 10 lb mutts.

The problem with a Pit Bull, Presa Canario or like breeds, if you don’t have a gun on your hip there is no way to stop them before they maim or kill people.

A pit bull would have no fear of you, even as big as you are. Your strategy is probably the best, though. I don't doubt you'd win against one pit bull, but you would incur some damage.
