Cyndi Lauper proves herself time after time in Tel Aviv
Jerusalem Post ^ | 5/1/14 | David Brinn

Cyndi Lauper let her true colors shine through on Saturday night at the Nokia Arena in Tel Aviv. Foul-mouthed, big-hearted and still quirky as hell after all these years, the bright-red haired, combat boot-wearing 60-year-old entertainer revisited her landmark debut album She's So Unusual, performing it in its entirety upon its 30th anniversary.

Whether spinning like a dervish, climbing onto speaker stacks, roaming out into the audience, or getting down on her knees to sing, Lauper has lost none of her spunky spirit, nor her powerful lung capacity. Her crack band, anchored by bassist William Wittman who performed and acted as engineer and producer on She's So Unusual back in 1983, accurately recaptured the new wave era, replete with echoing rim shots from the drums, cheesy synth riffs from the keyboards and upbeat dance tempos.

Nothing leads to mass exits for bathroom breaks more than “....and now here is a song from our new album.”

My wife and I went to the Donny & Marie Christmas Show in Nashville last month. They put on a great show. About two and a half hours. Everyone at the Bridgestone Arena loved it. And NOT ONE profane word was uttered. Quite refreshing. I detest those that seem to think it’s necessary to use that. As for Cindy Lauper, I have no use for her.

I respect Donnie and Marie for keeping their act clean and wholesome. On the other hand, it’s still Donnie and Marie.

Why the need to be Foul Mouth?

About 10 years ago, a fowl fouled her mouth at an outdoor venue in NH, iirc.

Direct hit during while holding a note. Luke Skywalker would have been jealous of the accuracy.

Probably a seagull.

RE: On the other hand, it’s still Donnie and Marie.

Did they do the: ‘I’m a little bit country, I’m a little bit rock and roll’ bit?

Wow. I had no idea.

She's got a brain!

Pretty funny line about having fun in her line of work, "Well, I could have been a brain surgeon or a rocket scientist, but ... "

Looks like Carson was pleasantly surprised!

She’s smart and funny!

I remember seeing this and noting that Carson really wanted her to come back. Didn’t recall him asking many people back right there on the show.

Yes. He asked her at least three times, over the course of the show.

Off topic but related (!!), I happened to catch the Carson Show that featured Sade. I'd never seen her but knew her songs (think "Sweetest Taboo," "Smooth Operator") pretty well. Her voice and style were exotic and smooth, pitch-perfect and strong, controlled to the point of a cool detachment ...

... and in real life she's just a complete bombshell drop-dead gorgeous woman, with an ice-cool lovely voice, like a vision! I got the impression that Carson was momentarily speechlessly taken with her. God didn't make many like Sade.

Can you imagine what fun George Burns would have on stage with Lauper! {^)

Lauper is a talented pretty human songbird. God doesn't make a lot of 'em.

“——— it is least admirable that she does make the absolute most of what little talent she has.”

You don’t need talent, you just have to Razzle Dazzle ‘em.

(With thanks to “Chicago”.

We’re both wrong, but I was closer. Queens.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyndi_Lauper#1953.E2.80.9379:_Early_life

Cyndi Lauper was raised in Ozone Park, Queens, in New York City.[10] Her family is Roman Catholic. Her father was of German and Swiss descent, and her mother is Italian American (from Sicily). She has an older sister, Ellen, and a younger brother, Fred (nicknamed Butch).[11] Lauper’s parents divorced when she was five years old.[12] Her mother subsequently remarried and divorced again.

As a child, Lauper listened to artists including Judy Garland, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and the Beatles. At age twelve, she began writing her own songs and playing an acoustic guitar given to her by her sister.[13] Even when she was young, Lauper expressed herself by dyeing her hair different colors and wearing radical fashions.
Lauper was accepted in a special public high school for students with talent in the visual arts, but eventually dropped out, and later earned her GED. At the age of seventeen, she left home, planning to study art. Her journey took her to Canada, where she spent two weeks in the woods with her dog Sparkle, trying to find herself. She eventually wound up in Vermont, where she took art classes at Johnson State College and supported herself by working odd jobs.
In the early-1970s, Lauper performed as a vocalist with various cover bands in the New York metropolitan area (such as Doc West and Flyer), singing hits by bands including Jefferson Airplane, Led Zeppelin, and Bad Company. Although Lauper was performing on stage, she was not happy singing cover songs. In 1977, Lauper damaged her vocal cords and took a year off. She was told by three doctors that she would never sing again, but regained her voice with the help of vocal coach Katie Agresta.[14]
