  • Russian conductor Valery Gergiev to hold Palmyra concert

A renowned Russian conductor will perform in the ruins of Palmyra in Syria on Thursday, Russian media say. Valery Gergiev, who supported Vladimir Putin's presidential run in 2012, will perform at Palmyra's Roman Theatre, Rossiya 24 reported. Syrian forces, backed by Russian air strikes, took back Palmyra from the so-called Islamic State (IS) in March. Last July, IS posted footage online showing some of its fighters carrying out killings in the ancient theatre. Rossiya 24 said the concert would be broadcast on Russian television later on Thursday. Mr Gergiev travelled to Syria with the Symphony Orchestra of St Petersburg's Mariinsky...

Merle Haggard, the country music icon who died Wednesday, credited President Ronald Reagan for playing a central role in helping him realize his dreams. “He was a wonderful man in my life. He gave me a second chance at life in the form of the pardon he gave me,” Haggard said in a CMT interview after Reagan’s death in 2004. Haggard, an acclaimed songwriter and performer, was a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and one of the most influential figures in popular music —not just in country circles. Haggard died at home in Northern California on the...

A free concert is very nice, but it's a reminder that Cuba remains in communist squalor It was awfully nice of the Rolling Stones to go to Havana this past weekend and play a concert for free. I’m sure the longtime victims of communism appreciated the gift - especially since exposure to any media that would have made them aware the Rolling Stones exist put them in jeopardy of prison under the Castro regime that Barack Obama thinks we can learn from about civil rights. The Stones may be almost as old as the Castros, but they rocked, as they...

We saw all sorts of proposals at the GOP debate which are designed to defeat the international threat posed by ISIS. Most of them involve somebody fighting somebody somewhere, but one solution was absent which should have been obvious. Clearly we can get ISIS to come to the table and stop lopping off people’s heads and setting them on fire if we just sing to them. Sound crazy? Crazy like a fox, maybe. When is a White House event for 500 people considered “private?” They won’t say. Nor would they say, in advance, that hundreds of guests were expected on Saturday night for a soiree and serenade from Prince, as guests of the President and First Lady. All White House spokesman Josh Earnest would say about the Saturday event was that the First Family paid for it (though he wouldn’t elaborate on how much it cost, or whether things like security were also covered).

The Michigan-born rapper riddled his HBO-streamed performance with curse words at the concert aimed at supporting U.S. servicemen and women. “Happy motherf***ing Veterans Day,” Eminem shouted into the microphone. Users on Twitter were quick to react, with some defending the rapper’s use of profanity and others criticizing his word choice.

Who would have thought that that Bruce Springsteen, Dave Grohl, and Zac Brown, accomplished musicians all, would be so, well, tone-deaf? But how else to explain their choice of song—Creedence Clearwater´s famously anti-war anthem “Fortunate Son”—at the ostensibly pro-military “Concert for Valor” this evening on the National Mall? The song, not to put too fine a point on it, is an anti-war screed, taking shots at "the red white and blue." It was a particularly terrible choice given that Fortunate Son is, moreover, an anti-draft song, and this concert was largely organized to honor those who volunteered to fight in

The dictionary defines a troubadour as ”one who composes or sings verses or ballads.” History has been littered with them. Some better than others. But to dismiss James Taylor or Carole King as merely troubadours would be like saying a Ferrari is merely a car… a Lear Jet is merely an airplane. Few recording artists have sold more records. Even fewer songwriters have had a greater impact on the lives of the boomer generation. (Click to see details about the amazing reunion concert and how it turned into the hottest tour of the year).
