LANSING, MI -- Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder is urging residents to exercise great caution as dangerous winter weather sweeps across the state.
"The heavy snowfall and expected 20-year low subzero temperatures and high winds are creating or have the potential to create hazardous conditions across most of the state," Snyder said in a release Sunday afternoon.
"We want everyone to be safe. Let's all pull together by taking care of ourselves and each other, which includes checking in on friends and neighbors who may need our help. Its times like this when Michiganders are at their best."
The National Weather Service is warning of up to a foot of snow in parts of lower Michigan along with high winds and extreme cold into early next week. The heaviest snow is expected Sunday evening, according to MLive resident meteorologist Mark Torregrossa.
Snyder is receiving regular updates from state authorities, according to the release, and those same authorities are sharing information with local emergency management officials, communities, school districts, county road commissions and facilities like hospitals and nursing homes.
Michigan State Police have added additional troopers and road patrols, and the Michigan Department of Transportation has sent all available plows out into the field.
"We"re prepared to move quickly with any requests for local emergency assistance if warranted," Snyder said. "I commend the MSP and our state and local emergency management teams for their professionalism during this challenging time, and urge residents to stay informed regarding the latest weather conditions and proper safety tips."
MSP and the national weather service have released tips for bearing the extreme cold, including recommendations for proper attire and signs of frostbite or hypothermia to watch for.
The governor and other state officials faced some criticism for failing to proactively assist communities in the in the wake of a massive ice storm that caused power outages over Christmas week. Snyder later explained that the state did not intervene because no community had requested assistance.
Most disasters and local emergencies are handled by local governments. If recovery efforts prove beyond their ability, local officials may request assistance through the Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division of the Michigan State Police.
Up to a foot my butt, we got nearly 18 inches so far and its still snowing.
Way over a foot and I didn’t expect the drifts. Haven’t seen many, if any, of those since we moved here 20+ years ago.
Still snowing here, too. Hope the furnace keeps up with the deep freeze that is on the way.
...now it looks like Connie Conehead.
Fortunately the wind is coming out of the north and not down the lake at me. I live below a small rise that lifts the wind up over me when it comes from the north.
The birds were downright frantic about feeding today. I filled all 3 feeders a second time today because they emptied them by 2 this afternoon.
Nasty here, we got an additional 11-12 inches on top of the 6 inches on the ground. Have been here since 1984 and the first time hubby had to plow us out twice in one day and the snow is still falling. Dang cold too!We are really going through the wood too.
Birds here too frantically feeding. We are between Grand Rapids and Lansing.
Tomorrow should be interesting.
God bless and stay warm up there!
I wonder how all thouse expensive mandated renewable energy projects are working out.
A Canadian friend responded to another friend on Facebook, when he was complaining about Chicago weather by saying, “We call that MONDAY MORNING!”. It’s all relative, isn’t it?
