Items made of cat fur have been found in two leading German high street chains, it emerged on Monday.

Animal protection group Animals' Liberty found clothes shop Tom Tailor was selling cat fur hats and drugstore chain Müller cat fur pompoms.

Experts confirmed to the group that the fur was indeed cat in reports which can be seen on the Animals' Liberty Facebook page. The fur likely came from China, according to the group. "The fur industry knows no limits," Animals' Liberty said on their Facebook page.

They added that they had informed the relevant veterinary offices and the consumer protection board as importing fur from domestic animals had been illegal in the EU since 2009. Müller released a statement following the accusation saying that the items were “promptly taken off the shelves.” Tom Tailor said that “we deeply regret what has happened," Bild newspaper reported.

Considering how many cats get euthanized in animal shelters every week, they probably got the fur for free.
