Yup. Couldn’t get my car out of my back yard till spring. Vand every year after that as soon as it snowed the streets looked like the worlds biggest yard sale as people “ reserved” the spots they dug out.

I can remember a few here in PA that were worse (Winter of ‘77, Christmas ‘83, Reagan’s 2nd. Inaugural)

Has been awhile though.

I was livin' up a hollar in WV in '77

Boston transplant that won respect of the natives becasuse I survived in the direst of circumstances (that everyone knew about, and took bets on ... heh heh heh)

ONE neighbor whom I respected and was a respected member of the community remarked I was now a mountain man.

We just blanket the horses and throw another log in the wood stove when it hits sub zero here.

I’ve been dealing with a college fleet car 300 miles away in Grand Forks. Daughter let a roommate use it because her car wouldn’t start in the -15 -20 weather last week. The roommate left the headlights on - which ended up killing the battery. So purchase a new one over the phone yesterday, daughter has to go get it, a neighbor helped put it in. -24F in Grand Forks yesterday. The car cranks fine but all the start attempts must have fouled the plugs or something because it still won’t start. So it’s wait until the temps warm up to -5 today and try again.

The car doesn’t have an engine heater, but has always started. Goes to show how one little mistake in this cold weather can really disturb the equilibrium. I might have to make a trip up there before this is over...

For most people, history is what we experience in our lifetime.......................but it has happened before.

Many young people have not experienced this and thus their belief in global warming.

Don't get any ideas. That handle is already taken.

I’m sorry for your loss, but I don’t remember that. Maybe that was the winter our roof (business) finally gave up the ghost. It only leaks when it is raining, or snowing, and we’ll get it fixed in the spring — finally. Its a long story, and I won’t bore you with our travails.

I’ve lived in Wisconsin since 1987, and this is the worst that I’ve ever seen. My husband and I did honeymoon in Lake Geneva in 1959 in February. That was before it was famous. We got trapped in our cottage and couldn’t get the car started until 5 PM the following day. I nearly starved to death on my first day of marriage! The best man’s wife had packed up our uneaten wedding luncheon (fried chicken) and tucked it into our luggage. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be here to tell this tale. LOL

I remember picking an enormous icicle off of the corner of the roof and thought that was so exciting (for a girl from California who had never seen a real icicle before). We cooled our champagne in a snow bank outside the door. When we finally got the car started, we went out for a big steak dinner in town.

One winter about 5 or 6 years ago, I neglected to drip the faucets thinking it won't get THAT cold.

I woke up to no water and had to go to work, so 10 or so hours later everything that contained water was a piece of rock.

I got the water flowing into the bathroom so I could at least bathe and have water and in a couple of days, it all thawed out.

I chased leaks (freeze bursts) for the next week.

Every time I rtepaired one, another .. either a break or a wekened spot .. leaked.

Crawling in and out of a dirty, wet and cold crawl space taught me a lesson.

I don't know how much I spent on repair parts, but the aggravation of using time I'd rather relax or sleep just pissed me off completely

I drip water now and take no chances.

heh heh heh ... Don't worry, I didn't adopt the life, but I have a deep respect for rural living (I live rural now in SWPa)

77 was a tough year for me ... summer AND winter.

Its been enjoyable reading all these posts. Talking about the travails and past travails, but no complaining.

As I've read these and noticed the spirit, I started wondering what they were saying over DU. But I refuse to go over to that DUmp. I imagine though that its full of anger and vitriol with a lot of hate and GW blaming.

"Not that big a deal. Growing up in the 70’s in Chicago it was routine. And they NEVER cancelled school or shut down the government."

Wind chills here in central NY State are -20 because of the high winds. I grew up in Rochester, NY, and well remember having to walk to school in this kind of weather, and you're right...they never cancelled school because of the weather. The walk was over a mile one way. No school buses back then. I'd put slacks on under my skirt or dress and bundle up for the long walk. My Dad worked on the railroad and was out in this weather all day working on the tracks. And years later, the job I retired from required me to be out in all kinds of weather.
