Bird Report in Your Area; Sightings, Activity & Survival during Polar Vortex [Vanity]

How are birds in your area dealing with the cold weather? Any sightings or interesting stories worth sharing here?

There are reports of Arctic birds coming down into North America, including parts of the United States during this 'polar vortex'.. Any sightings?

Some birds flee the cold areas for warmer climates, and some stay and endure it by hiding in sheltered areas such as hollow or thick trees in groups.

If you have the means to set food out for birds, finding food is more of a problem for them during cold temperatures than enduring the temperature is.

During this cold wave, share your observations of bird activity for your area here. Thanks.

Plenty of action at the feeder, cardinals etc. (Indiana)
One little Junco bit the dust and one of my Golden Rets proudly brought it to the door.

They’ve eaten about 10 lbs of food from 3 feeders and 4 suet cakes in the last 3 days.

Ducks are still swimming in the flowing river.

All of our birds have died. It’s that cold! We’re all gonna die.

You think the Junco froze to death?

They’re flying sideways, but other than that, all is normal in the Vampire State.

Busy little birds in my fenced in back yard. Just threw some BOSS on the sidewalk for them.

They didn’t touch the chicken scratch I put out for them yesterday.

I don’t have any conventional birdseed, just what I give my chickens for treats.

I saw sparrows digging through the snow to get down into the juniper bushes yesterday.

Kind of amazing that such tiny animals can survive in this kind of cold. I know mice and voles are also active under the snow.

Just curious, what is the normal consumption rate?

Quite possible. It was at the base of the feeder on the ground this morning. Temp was -12F, not as windy as yesterday.

There is currently a snowy owl ‘irruption’ with one snowy seen as far south as FL this year. Birdwatchers are very excited to have these gorgeous birds in their areas. Here is a link to a good article and a beautiful video on snowy owls .... enjoy!

I have Wrens, Blue Jays, Sparrows and an unknown brown peckerwood at my window right now, busily trying to consume the dog food leftover from my putting out food for the raccoon family who has adopted me but failed to show last night when it was wind chill of 20 below zero. oops, there comes a cardinal to join the party! The Blue Jays sit on the plant stand and look in, as if to say, ‘Hey, why don’t you do this more often, bub?’

No that was especially heavy feeding. Not so much yesterday with all the wind but they were definitely preparing for it the day before.

Cardinals are busy at my feeder here in eastern Missouri. Having fresh water in my heated birdbath is a big draw when everything else is frozen.

I love watching that kind of weather but I don’t want to be out in it.
