How To Heat Your Home Using Just Tea Lights And Flower Pots
Business Insider ^ | 1-6-14 | Dina Spector

As parts of the United States prepare for record-breaking cold temperatures, a YouTube video showing an alternative way to heat your home might come in handy.

The video, which we first found on Why Don't You Try This, was made by journalist and boat-owner Dylan Winter. All you need to make this do-it-yourself heater are tea lights, a loaf tin, and two clay flower pots.

You can find tea light candles at pretty much any drug or hardware store. A pack of 50 is only $5.99 at CVS, for instance.

In the video, Winter places four tea lights into a loaf tin and covers them with a small flower pot that's turned upside down. He then covers the drain hole on the bottom of the small pot with the metal casing from one of the tea lights. The small pot is covered by a bigger flower pot and the hole is not covered.

In the pre-industrial age, they kept all of the livestock downstairs while they slept in the loft. Kept the people from freezing to death.

I was going to mention the tile stoves of Europe. Thanks for the links. They are beautiful stoves. Would love to have a place for one. Upstairs won’t take the weight.

I moved into a house before the electricity could be turned on and placed candles in front of mirrors. Worked like a charm.

Be very careful that the wick doesn’t contain a metal thread. I was given one and didn’t realize it. It left black soot all over everything in the house. It was invisible at the time. Imagine what we were breathing.

And think of the heat produced by incandescent light bulbs that helped out before the were banned

I have enough to last for many years. Sitting next to one or two will take a bit of chill off. Makes for hand warmers. That's if you have electricity.

“Why do you keep...”

I guess you are the one who comes out of the woodwork to argue every time. These Sanyos have a white body and the AAs recharge 1,500 times. They hold a charge up to 3 years. I am reading off the card to which some were attached. Why don't you write an article about a Sanyo AA that is better, give the reasons why, and give a place to buy them along with the cost, as perhaps since Feb., 2013, there is another generation as I'm sure the company did not shut down in Feb., 2013. Not responding to you again.

As a point of interest...

My .02:

I've ALWAYS banned all candles in the house as our #1 fire prevention method.

“This doesn’t pass the “btu” smell test.”

Candles seem to be around 250 BTU/hr based on the average of some experiments I found.

So about 20 of them would equal your typical 5000 Btu/hr space heater

Marcella, I am not coming out of the woodwork, so you can layoff the personal stuff, I am a freeper with decades of experience in preparedness and who initially informed you on Eneloops, now trying to keep you from constantly linking people to buying the older, outdated version.

How do you manage to get angry about good prepper information?

For months I have mentioned on threads, at least once directly to you, that people should search for the more modern Eneloops, not the ones you continue to link to.

“eneloop (3rd generation)
In October 2011 the batteries were again improved to hold their charge for up to 90% after one year, 80% after 3 years and 70% after five years. In addition to the lower self-discharge rate, the batteries can be recharged up to 1800 times compared to 1500 times in the previous revision”

That was in Japan, the generation 3 Eneloops didn’t start being sold in America until just recently, that is why almost all the ones you see everywhere and at Amazon and Costco, etc, are generation 2. Amazon does sell the generation 3s BUT you have to look for “1800” cycles, not “1500” cycles, ignore the words, “newest generation”.

Just go to Amazon to buy them, but make sure you get the newer ones, such as from these links.

Correction, it was the Tenergy and the adapters that I told you about, not the Eneloops, but I did describe the new gen 3 Eneloops to you in early November of 2012.

People should buy the newest versions available to gain the improvements over the older versions, which for some reason, they still sell at Amazon and allow to be called “new generation”, etc.rather than making them revamp their descriptions.

Yep, you are the one who shows up. I found Eneloops while researching for an article on another website and it was much later before I put anything on this website about those batteries.

You say that “now” there is another generation only “recently” being sold in this country. Fine, now there is a new generation that is actually being sold. The new generation AA can be recharged 1,800 times up from 1,500 times. An 8 pack of the ones only recently for sale cost $6.26 more than the one that recharges 1,500 times, on Amazon. If you need more than eight batteries for the 1,800 times, add another $6.26 per each 8 pack. If 1,500 times is enough for you, save $6.26 for each 8 pack you buy. That is an economic question each buyer can decide.

Within six months, there will likely be another generation so a buyer can wait for that one and pay even more money. If you want to buy a 2014 car, maybe you should wait until later in the year when the 2015 comes out, however, if you wait more months, the 2016 will be out, etc., etc.

Our only house fire was due candles... Years ago as a youth, mom lit some candles and forgot to blow them out at bedtime. She had decorated the living room with those ornate plastic grapes around the hearth of the fireplace and the candle burned down to them (next to the candle) and set them on fire. Fortunately one of us got up to use the restroom and with some screaming we were putting out the fire (before the smoke detector went off too). $12,000 dollars later in fire insurance (month time), we were good as new.

Another 3-5 minutes with no warning and we might of died that night.

Shows up to what Marcella, freerepublic? You need to relax a little bit and realize that other people know things about preparedness, and even something about flashlights and batteries, and also realize that you are just one among us, with opinions or recommendations, personally I recommend knowing what one is missing out on when buying survival gear, for instance the longer shelf life of the newer Eneloops.

How you picked up such hostility to the version of Eneloops that replaced your older version, is baffling.

The gen3 Eneloop which are the ones I choose to own, have quality reflected in the 1800 versus 1500 charges, but there is more to it than that, they hold more juice at one year and they retain 70% of their charge at 5 years. Will they perform better in cold and heat? possibly, advances count.

LSD batteries only advantage is shelf life while holding a charge, non LSD rechargeables are better for many uses, for instance if you recharge your batteries frequently and use them a lot (because they can hold more power but self discharge over a short period of time). All three of your links have very interesting decor, not just the stoves alone. Can you imagine a room as this in your home?

I agree with you totally. Life pretty much sucked back then if you weren't rich. I never understood romanticizing the American Indian either. Can you imagine being a Sioux Squaw? Dragging a tepee behind you, with a child strapped to your back, following the buffalo herds and collecting buffalo chips for fire. If I were “native American” I'd give up that lifestyle in a heartbeat.
