I am SO DONE with candles after our week-long power outage last winter. Not only are they dim and cold, I don’t even think they are pretty any more. Could barely see to make coffee, although I had a whole slew of them. Sure couldn’t read by them.
We got LED lanterns for the next one, thank you. Made me aware of the Reality of soddies and early cabins/ early American way of life. No thanks for me.
We have a ton of LED flashlights but we also have eight 19th century indoor lanterns. Those suckers are BRIGHT. They generate a fair amount of heat too, but I don’t want to die of asphyxiation or oxygen starvation. i.e. I don’t want to go to bed and wake up dead.
I got two of those Brooklyn Latterns that are shown on tv and they work really well.
I bought a bunch of kerosene lanterns at garage sales, etc. Provides good light and a little bit of heat. Years ago the power went out. I was working on my laptop off of a marine battery under the kerosene lamp. Sent off my report over the dial up on the phone line. Boy - talk about pioneer days!

I have some old timey oil lamps we use in a pinch - they put out more light than candles. My dad has told me that the one sure way to get a spanking from his dad when he was a kid was to run in the house when the oil lamps were lit (1920’s-30’s time period).
In a pinch, it's good to set up mirrors behind them. Double the light.
Kerosene lamps are much better than candles. Larger flame, so brighter. Won’t compete with your LEDs, of course. But much better than candles. First thing I go for.
