With the pain becoming excruciating, his flatmate rushed him to hospital where a doctor put oil down the ear canal.
This only forced the two centimeter (0.8 inch) roach to crawl in deeper, before it eventually began to die.
"Near the 10 minute mark ... somewhere about there, he started to stop burrowing but he was still in the throes of death twitching," said Helmer.
At that point the doctor put forceps into his ear and pulled out the cockroach.

Many years ago, I had severe ear irritation, so the doc took a look and said I was plugged up with wax......he did the oil thing, but it wouldn't budge, so he sent me home with instructions to re-douche a few times and come back in three days.
He still had a tough go of it, but when it came out it was the size and shape of a cigarette filter, and hard as a rock.
Wifey and I have since learned the ear lavage techniques and do me up about four times a year.

Boy, you should have seen the booger I pulled out of my nose the other day. It crawled away by itself after I managed to wipe it on something nearby.

OMG, stop sharing your gross stories! Instead of just when sleeping, I think I’ll go through life wearing ear plugs...

I was sleeping one night and felt this thing land on my stomach and start to burrow in through my belly button. I screamed as I tried to gouge out the bug. The pain was excruciating and I passed out.
When I woke up I found myself on a ledge of a building, holding a phone and the person was on the other end telling me to jump. Things got a bit foggy after that, but needless to say I believe I saved Zion, got the girl and developed a whole new perspective on science fiction....
Or was it?

Got an earwig in my ear one hot humid Austin night almost 30 years ago. Excruciating pain. Nothing I did would dislodge it; it would just burrow deeper.
Finally poured some rubbing alcohol in my ear and he fell out dead.
Probably not the best plan, but it worked.

A bit more pro-active and healthier might be to dip a q-tip in Hydrogen Peroxide (just till it is damp) and stick in the ear till you hear no more bubbling sound. Then if you want dip one in water and quickly swab that ear out.
I never have wax buildup and never have persistent ear infections.. ever.

If you ever sleep on the ground outside, you might want to wear ear plugs. Then you won't hear the bears sneaking up.

I was coon hunting one night, shining a tree, when a moth flew into my ear. It was excruciatingly painful and the moth lived for a couple of hours or so until I could get out of the woods with my dog, get to a drug store for an ear syringe, and flush the moth out with soapy water. As soon as the soapy water hit my ear canal, I could feel the life sucked out of that moth. Ever since, I’ve been paranoid as hell whenever bugs fly around my ears.
