First off I despise Washington DC and how it is grabbing power that belongs to the states and to the citizens.
so..... For a long time I refused to watch this series. I was wrong. As far as I can tell only the Democrat Party is in this. It shows the Democrat operatives, Senators, President, Congressmen and skullduggery they engage in to keep and exercise power
This gets 5 out of 5 stars from me. Lots of dark humor and sexual activity outside the marriage. Lots of undermining of rivals. Lots of horse trading.
So far I have not seen these inside the Beltway Democrats do one useful thing. All they do is blow the taxpayers money to buy votes

I watched the first season back-to-back over Christmas on Netflix.
My first impression was similar to yours, but as I proceeded through the episodes, it began to seem dated.
I think the story is based on the politics of the Carter and Clinton administrations; the theme being skullduggery (small scale compared to what goes on today) in the service of doing good. Today's Washington operates on a completely different order of skullduggery.
In short, it's nostalgia.
Yah, I think it’s terrific. And there is not that much prejudice against conservatives. It shows the real seamy side of liberals.

For decades and decades “political” themed dramas were regarded as box-office poison by Hollywood. Even in television in the 60s, the few examples, like “Slattery’s People,” or the tv-version of “Mr. Smith goes to Washington” were basically bombs.
I guess things have changed somewhat. Still, even if the drama is good, I can’t imagine wanting to see ANY series with a Washington/political backdrop. I just have too deep a loathing for politicians and the whole political culture.
Or even earlier. I sort of got that impression too. The idea of a (White) South Carolina Democrat having that much power is anachronistic. Pretty common fifty or sixty years ago. Unheard of today.
The original British series came across as very, very anti-Tory, very, very anti-Thatcher. I was surprised to find out that the novel was written by a top Thatcher staffer. I don't know how the BBC may have distorted his work, but it seems like he was interested in creating a character and a story than in scoring political points.
I thought it was wise to make Spacey's lead character a Democrat. It's too easy for Hollywood to make Republican jokes. Knee jerk sniping at the GOP gets in the way of doing anything else.
Cartoonist Garry Trudeau took Charles Schumer's rooming with Dick Durbin and turned it into a series about four Republican Senators living together. I haven't seen it, but it sounds pretty awful. Trudeau goes all the expected places.
I haven’t seen this version but was hooked on the British version cause I hoped the main character would be offed eventually.
What a shocker the US version protrays Democrats as crooked scum...I actually like that.

Bingo! I love the show, too. In fact it almost looks like pro-conservative considering democrats bashing them there.
