Why People Are Divided by Politics and Religion I wonder if any Freepers are aware of Jon Haidt. His theories explain a lot and explain why we are in this current battle of Freedom vs. Fairness.
He is a self-identified liberal so dont let your friends when you explain this to them get away with saying he is a right wing wacko.
Basically he has found that there what he calls Moral Foundations that humans everywhere subscribe to. These are in our makeups, and we filter information to fit them into our moral foundation.
Basically there are 5 of these:
Care/Harm Fairness/Cheating Loyalty/Betrayal Authority/Anarchy Purity/Hedonism
Everybody is born with these because of the human survival instinct. But instead of weighting these all the same the every human falls into 2 ways of attaching importance to these moral foundations.
The liberal attaches more weight to these foundations starting with care/harm the most important and decreasing from there to the lowest which is purity/hedonism. The conservative weighs them all equally.
If you keep this in mind, like a decoder ring liberals start making sense.
They are morally imbalanced, they are katty womp us, they have issues, but you can see where they are coming from.

A good overview of his ideas is at the video link which was originally recorded for a Ted Talk.

Much obliged Deks.
I have some people I am friendly with who support abortion.
Their minds are diseased.
They can’t respond to or formulate any sort of rational argument, but always fall back on media clichés. They insist that all questions about the good intentions of government are “conspiracy theories.”
They are committed to complacency about everything. That, of course, is what being “pro-choice” is: complacency in the face of evil.
I have always been a single-issue pro-life voter because it has always been self-evident to me that pro-abortion politicians are wicked, violent, unjust liars who will destroy the country if given power.
Wow, this thread went no where.
Note to self: Check title for liberal mindset on FR.
Why People Are Divided by Politics and Religion
Should be: Figuring out the Liberal Mind or somesuch thing.
Too bad too.
Knowing this they go from Loco SOB’s to understandable but wrong.
Thank you kindly for your input.
If you keep in mind their two priorities are: “Don’t be selfish” and “Do no harm” you can understand them better.
In this simplistic world decisions are easy but often result in the widespread suffering however.
With the topic of abortion you also need to consider that the concept of ‘personal responsibility’ is extremely low on their priorities.
So to a conservative yeah the mom might have some issues but she brought them on herself makes sense.
Not so much for the lib.
Also the conservative can see that there will be a lot of issues for the women post abortion. Libs are not that subtle.
When you consider the human life in the equation, it is a no brainer for the conservative but all the reasoning doesn’t even make sense to the lib.
We aren’t divided. It’s an absolute fact the left is wrong on all points.
Explains every female lib I’ve ever met.
The discussion is continued on this subsequent thread. . .
