Princess Madeleine and her husband Christopher O'Neil have decided that their child will be born in the US, the Swedish Royal Court has announced.
Madeleine reveals royal baby's gender: report (30 Oct 13) Pregnant Princess to attend Nobel alone (19 Oct 13) Royal baby on the way for Swedish princess (03 Sep 13)
"After careful consideration and in consultation with the King and Queen, Princess Madeleine and Mr. Christopher O'Neill have decided that their child will be born in New York," Svante Lindqvist at the Royal Court wrote in a statement.
The baby, set to become fifth in line to the Swedish throne, is expected to arrive at the end of February 2014.
Writer and royal expert Roger Lundgren has explained Madeleine's decision to give birth in New York as a purely practical decision.
"She has had a tough pregnancy, she missed the Nobel banquette for example, and it is simply more convenient to give birth there than in Sweden," he said.
"But many here at home will probably be disappointed, they want their princess back home in Sweden, as part of the royal family. The fact that Madeleine will give birth abroad cements a distance to her."
Lundgren explained that the decision carries no constitutional consequences.
"It has no constitutional significance where she gives birth, as the King and Queen have given their approval."
"Today we live in a global world, we live around the world and experience new things. This will be an international child which will get the best of different worlds," Lundgren told the TT news agency.
Too dangerous to use socialized medicine?
The kid’s father seems to be not Swedish based on his totally Irish name, but whether his is an American or not I don’t know, nor do I know how that would affect the nationality of the child. I suppose the child might be a US citizen, but someone else here was saying that those laws don’t apply to diplomats, etc.
In any event the child will be 5th in line, so I assume the Princess has older siblings and maybe they have kids too. Who knows - could be 5th in line now, 10th in line in a few years.
To me this is not a big deal, she lives here, she wants to complete her pregnancy here, I’m sure I’d feel exactly the same way. It was either go back to Sweden for 6 months or have the baby here. I suppose if I were Swedish it might irritate me, but I’m not so it doesn’t.
The father is British.
“The father is British.”
English British or Irish British?
(See, here we are getting into my ethnic wheelhouse!)
Probably because of the superior telephone system.
