Baby wipes are leaving children with an itchy, scaly and red rash which is often misdiagnosed as a more serious skin condition, a study revealed today.

An allergic reaction to moist wipes is believed to be behind the rash which is being mistaken for conditions such as eczema, impetigo and psoriasis.

Dr Mary Wu Chang, a professor of dermatology and pediatrics at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, said that she has seen six children with the mysterious rash over the past two years.

I believe it. Some wipes will burn like everything after a few seconds.

Six over the last two years. Hmmm, not a very high incidence number. Still it’s something to be aware of as a possible occurence.

Six over the last two years? I suspect it has more to do with hygiene than a chemical in the wipes. Those wipes were not meant to replace bathing with soap and water. I’ve seen too many kids sent to school each morning, with dirt around their necks and food caked on their teeth, because their parents were too lazy to attend them prior to sending them off to school. Too many employ the “Handi-Wipes” for a quick mop up of food on the face, leaving its detergents on the child’s skin, day after day.

Me: Grandma, why does this happen everytime I do this.

Grandma: Stop doing that.

Me: Thanks Grandma, you are so smart.

I’ve used a number of different brands of baby wipes. The one used the longest because it doesn’t cause rashes or burning: COSTCO’s store brand of baby wipes.
