PHILADELPHIA – A federal judge in Philadelphia has preliminarily rejected a $765 million settlement of NFL concussion claims, fearing the sum may not be enough to cover injured players.
U.S. District Judge Anita Brody has asked for more financial details from the parties, a week after players' lawyers filed a lengthy payout plan.

Being a judge I’m sure she has the cost of medical concussion treatments calculated down to the last penny.

Is this saying that both parties agree on a settlement and some outsider doesn’t agree?
The NFL does not want that. The absolutely must have this thing settled.
I could be wrong but I’m fairly sure a judge needs to sign of on the agreement. Pretty standard.
IMO it’s been the responsibility of the medical community...particularly neurologists,neurosurgeons and neuropathologists...to publicize *everything* they knew about this particular issue.If they had enough data to recommend that people shouldn’t play pro football...or high school or college football for that matter then there you go.If they didn’t,then obviously there’s no issue here.These medical experts having announced that there’s a problem,assuming there was one,individual players could make their own decisions.There are plenty of dangerous occupations out there and most of them manage to attract applicants.I have enormous trouble assigning blame to the NFL here.
It’s a class settlement, and so because this defines the rights of people who haven’t sued, the judge is responsible for making sure it is a fair settlement and not just a windfall for the plaintiff’s lawyers. She said the settlement was too small, and she is probably right.

The deal does NOT destroy the NFL (HUGE!!!!, AMERICAN, HUGE!!!! SUCCESSFUL, VIOLENT, HUGE!!!!), therefore the deal MUST be struck down.

While the judge may not have perfect knowledge, she probably understands that the lawyers for the players will be getting a huge payday once it settles. Because of that, those attorneys have a motivation to settle the matter so they can get paid sooner rather than later.
