I was born in South Carolina fifty miles from where I now live and three miles from the upper reaches of the same stream that runs along my property line on the North side. The state has changed so much since 1944 that it is like living on a different planet. Some of that change has been for the better but much of it has definitely been for the worse. The men who used to wear chain gang stripes and clear the ditchbanks were far more honorable back then than many who sit on the judge’s bench now.
