Indeed, the much-revered Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves only in those states which were in “rebellion.”

That, and it heavily depended on the North winning.

Good call. However, there is lots of beating of black people going on in the movie itself, so it’s perfect for DVD.

I’ve seen 6 of the 9 best picture nominees (first year of retirement and I’m recovering from an injury. LOTS of free time) and so far “12 years a Slave” is hands down the best picture, best actor, best director. As far as the genera goes, it is easily as good as “The Color Purple” and much better than the long winded “Roots”.

Doesn't matter to me. I'm not going to put cash into a Leftist's pocket.

Nah, not going for the bait. I’m not into the beating of blacks any more than I am into the beating of non-blacks. I really don’t much care for the whole beating thing. Shooting zombies, now you’re talking. Remember rule #2.

I saw several of the “best movies” of the year. 12 years a Slave was certainly not on that list.

Rmember Yankee General U.S. Grant? At the beginning of the war, his wife owned slaves. At the end of the war, she still owned slaves. It took the 13th ammendment to free her slaves.

Untrue, or at minimum incomplete.

Grant's wife may or may not have owned slaves. Her wealthy father certainly did and "gave" some to her to help around the house. There is no record of any transfer of legal title, which may or may not have happened.

Whether she or her father owned the slaves legally, they were freed with all other MO slaves in January 1865 by state action, almost a year before 13A in December.

Almost all slaves were freed by Emancipation Proclamation or state action. 13A freed slaves only in DE (about 200) and KY (around 50,000).

More to the point with regard to Grant's attitude towards slavery, he actually legally owned one slave. This was a couple of years before the war. Grant and his family were in severe financial straits.

We have the record of Grant freeing this slave, who could probably have been sold for around $1000, considerably more than the median annual income for the time.

IOW, somewhere upwards of $50,000, in today's terms.

Remember General William T. Sherman? He also owned slaves.

When and where?

It pops up on YT briefly from time to time. I assume it’s white guilt propaganda.

I’m sure its hard if not impossible for you to accept that many many people in the North owned slaves all through out the Civil war. When asked about it Grant was known to have said that it was just too hard to get good help.

Deal with it.

Hey idiot, the American people elected a halfrican, what more do you want? In addition to that he is getting even with Whitey, the country is well on its way to destruction, after all he has three years left to complete his life long aim.
So I don’t feel the need to spend another 10 bucks to watch on a movie screen what Millions are experiencing every day in real life, racism by Eric Holder and Hussein Obama on a stunning scale.
By the way how is the BROTHER doing in his treatment of the 98 percent of the black community he identifies with? Labor participation at the lowest point in the History of the country, more people in poverty after 5 years of his stewardship, the destruction of the black family unit, three quarters of the black births illegitimate,Great job all whiteys fault of course

I wish these useful idiots would watch “The Lives of Others.” Then again, it’s probably their dream come true.

Prior to the War, the boundary line between North and South was generally considered to coincide to the line between slave and free states.

IOW, nobody in the North owned slaves during the war, using that definition, although some in southern states that remained loyal to the Union did.

Your claim was that Grant and Sherman both owned slaves.

I demonstrated that your claims about Grant were exaggerated if not false, and asked you for something resembling evidence that your claim about Sherman was true.

You responded by irrelevant remarks about northerners owning slaves. Why don’t you document your attack on General Sherman?

I am somewhat familiar with Sherman’s life prior to the war. While it is entirely probable he used borrowed or rented slave labor for brief periods, it’s unlikely he ever had the time or spare funds to go around purchasing slaves.

About 5000 blacks died in the entire past century due to racial violence perpetrated by whites.

Technically, that's the number of people killed in lynchings from around 1880 to the 1950s. Probably a little overstated, since about a third of that number were white.

The number of blacks killed in racial violence by whites is no doubt much higher, since a lot of blacks were just murdered by whites, rather than lynched as such, under Jim Crow.

The dirty little secret of when the North abolished slavery was it was usually not immediate manumission giving the slave holders plenty of time to sell their slaves south of the Mason-Dixon line.

Quite true. The census after emancipation usually showed a precipitous drop in number of black people, because most of those who were slaves were sold South before emancipation kicked in.

many many people in the North owned slaves all through out the Civil war.

Technically that is not accurate.

State action ended slavery in all Union States before the end of the war, with the exception of KY and DE. By the end of the war there were only about 50,000 slaves left in the US, almost all of them in KY.

13A did not so much emancipate slaves as it ended the institution of slavery. Prior to 13A any state could have decided to restart slavery.

Nice try but no cigar.

Just because I like you maybe we will carve a whiskey bottle on Stone Mountain to commemorate Grant. Maybe he was too drunk to notice his wife owned all those slaves. LOL!!!

“Your claim was that Grant and Sherman both owned slaves”

A claim is a parcel of land that you dig up gold on. :-)

The written recorded history of the Civil War verifies that Sherman and Grant as well as many other Northern officers and northerners including blacks owned slaves.

I know its hard to face I want to help you. I care about you. :-)
