Not many people understood why Monica Smith began working on her 8×10 shed in the back yard… and then they laughed when they realized she was turning it into a tiny cabin. It seemed strange that she was putting so much effort into just a shed. But it wasn’t just a hobby. Her youngest daughter and 5 children lost their home. So, Monica decided to give them her own and move out to the back yard.

This may be the coolest grandmother ever.

This woman is amazing.

If I ever turned my garage into a home it would be condemned immediately;)

Monica didn’t even hire contractors to help her complete this project

And that will be her undoing. We are very far removed from the days of self-sufficiency. The government MUST have their pound of flesh to allow you to live on your property.

God speed to this woman.

“Monica didn’t even hire contractors to help her complete this project. She did all of the work herself,”

a lost American trait nowadays. If gramma’ were around the late 1900’s, she would have built a city of her own

Now the property appraiser and code enforcement knows about it.

Look up “Katrina Cottage” and you’ll see there are a number of small ( under 1100 sq. ft.) house plans that don’t look too bad.

The government MUST have their pound of flesh to allow you to live on your property.

I read the entire article. There is no mention of building permits, EPA inspections, or zoning waivers. And what's worse, she did not use federal grant money to do pay for it all!

That lady is obviously some sort of anti-government troublemaker. Could be one of those Tea Party types I've been reading about.

And that will be her undoing

Have you ever seen the TV show, "Treehouse Masters"? This contractor custom builds amazing treehouses for clients all over the US. These often are party pads with plumbing, kitchens, etc. Some of these are in rural locations, but many of these structures are in cities.

NEVER does the show ever refer to a building inspector. I'm waiting for the city inspectors to show up and declare the structures illegal and force the owners to tear them down. There are substantial investments in these dwellings.

As much as I'd like a treehouse, I'd never build one on my property. Every spring in Wisconsin, I lose 2, or 3, trees to the weather. Often there is no warning. My house is 50+ years old, and I've noticed that that is when the trees start falling, although I have neighbors who have lost trees at a younger age. My friend lived in a house in the woods that is 80+ years old. She even lost oaks annually. Provided an endless supply of firewood.

No Permit? She’ll probably be ordered to pay to have it torn down and hauled away before the year is done.

Now that the local authorities know about it the code enforcers will arrive and make her tear it down.

The only right you have when you own property is the right to pay taxes on it.

There will be more to this story..... and not good news as soon as the local building commissars check it out. Hope someone local follows up on this.

No toilet/bathroom?

And granny has to climb that ladder to her bedroom?

Too bad she doesn’t seem to have a son-in-law.

The red oaks on my land seem to fall a lot. They don’t seem to have much of a tap root.
