If you see a mushroom cloud DO run (but only for 30 minutes):Why it’s better to run away from nuclea

Should you be in the unfortunate position of being in the area when a nuclear bomb explodes, new research suggests rather than 'sheltering in place' as many emergency programs insist, your best bet for survival might be to run away from the blast.

Sheltering in place is not always the best survival strategy after a nuclear detonation. If you can reach higher quality shelter in less than 30 minutes, you should go for it.

If out in the open, you need to find any shelter at all as quickly as possible.

I question the timing of this article. Is the government expecting something? Planning something?

Upwind. Get upwind. If you aren’t caught by the blast wave or worse, direct neutron/induced gamma, or thermal pulse your greatest danger is all the horrific crud being carried up with the fireball. When it starts to come back down, be long gone.

Not that I’m prepared either, gas masks would be essential.

The idea is that internal isotopes inhaled as dust are likely going to kill you faster than ambient gamma. If you are within a few miles of the blast, at ground or above, the gamma will kill you anyway.

Jim Garrow’s car was tampered with—interesting interview, although with people FR doesn’t like listed. Please share this.

Breathe through a particulate filter mask, shower & change clothes once you are out of the fallout umbrella (if you are walking, do so UNDER an ordinary rain umbrella) and then consume only sealed, protected food & drink.

If you are protected from the initial thermal & blast wave (which cause the most casualties, NOT the radiation) & have the equivalent of 3 feet of moist earth between you & the detonation to absorb the gamma ray burst, you will survive the bomb.... maybe not the chaotic aftermath, but that’s a human problem, not a nuclear radiation problem.

WHAT SHELTERS!!!

All the ‘Civil Defense’ shelters in most of America’s cities have been dismantled!!

In this day and age, with such an effective local resopnse team for everyday actions, I would advise to stand there, and ‘watch the ball’. It would be more kind.

I say this not as just one of many in this nation, but as a survivor of the Cold War, and a GI Brat when that fathead New York Yankee first string choice Castro allowed IRBM’s to be installed on his Communist island.

There are some standard rules you should follow.

1) The first thing you will see is a very bright flash. If you have the presence of mind to count, do so, because that can be extremely valuable information to have in the near future. You should hit the dirt, because there is soon to be a blast wave with flying objects at a high rate of speed. And if you are on the ground you are less likely to be hit by them. When the blast wave hits, stop counting.

2) Do not look at the pretty mushroom cloud. Your inclination is to stare at it, which you must not do. You want to get behind dirt, concrete, anything thick and dense until the mushroom cloud is pretty much over. This is because that burning cloud is also emitting a LOT of radiation.

3) Now you want to go to someplace, hopefully underground, as soon as possible. Be advised, you will have to stay there for a minimum of two weeks until the fallout has decayed enough for you to leave.

4) Whether you are above ground or underground in a building, you want to be near the wall furthest away from the detonation. Dense thick walls and distance are your friends.

5) No, those aren’t flesh eating zombies. Those are people with severe burns and radiation poisoning. They will desperately want to get to water. They are the first group to die, after those who were instantly killed.

The next group are those who got a big dose of radiation and are facing organ failure. Lesser numbers of people will die of various things until about a month after the detonation, when many people’s immune systems will temporarily shut down, making them very susceptible to disease.

IIRC , The TV movie called The Day After c. 1984 depicted EMP, all the cars were stuck with alternators fritzed.

Most people will be texting and/or looking at their phones wondering why you’re honking for them to get out of the left lane.

Don’t know that this will be the topic tonight at 9:00pm Central time, but this is the guy who interviewed Garrow on Dec. 22, 2013. Had me glued to my seat. Now, Garrow’s car has been tampered with.

I'm not sure I will be able to see a mushroom cloud over DC from where I am, but I look forward to it anyway.
