I always worry about rabies with animals living in the wild

You don't have to worry with squirrels, there's never been a recorded case of a squirrel having rabies........The reason being, any squirrel unlucky enough to be bitten by another animal having rabies would likely end up being eaten by them.

"rabies"

rodents rarely get rabies. There is no known case of a rodent transmitting rabies to a human. Squirrels can get a sort of ringworm brain disease that resembles rabies.
