Police said the dog charged toward officers.
San Francisco police shot and killed a dog in Potrero Hill Saturday morning.
The shooting happened on the 1000 block of Connecticut Street around 10 a.m. where housing officers were checking for squatters in vacant homes.
When an officer opened the door of an abandoned unit, a dog charged at him. The officer then shot and killed the dog as he was falling, according to police Sgt. Danielle Newman.
"I feel like he really did need to get shot though because he was a dangerous dog in the neighborhood," neighbor Elizabeth Jamison said.
The dog's owner, who was squatting inside, was arrested for trespassing, according to police. Police also said he could face other charges if they find he unleashed the dog to attack the officers.
Why is it that dogs seem to have become so much more dangerous....to police?
**********IF********** the story is as portrayed, it seems justified. Did the dog charge then stop? Did the officer trip and fall because of his uncontrollable fear of dogs? Color me skeptical.
Agreed.
My dad was a letter carrier and got bit often. He loved dogs too but some of the bites he received required surgery and the threat of Rabies. They gave my father and other carriers pepper spray that often had no affect against an attacking dog. Maybe this cop just didn’t want to be bit.
My point was that the incidence of dog shooting by cops seems to be more frequent. Of course some dogs do bite and nobody wants to be bitten. But the increased frequency of the shootings begs the question: Have the dogs changed, or has the police attitude toward killing them changed?

Shooting feral dogs (as opposed to someone’s pet) has always been okay.
Don’t think most of the dogs shot by police lately have been feral.
Smells very, very much like a lie.
Gay SFPD = liars and crooks.
This particular dog was though.
In responding to posts, hold officers who do bad things accountable, not those who do not.
I am addressing this article. This incident.
In incidents where an officer shoots some one’s corgi while investigating a noise complaint (or similar incidents) I am quick to condemn that action.
Blanket generalizations that intentionally take things out of context are not something I am going to pile on to.

I guess what led me to think the dog was not feral were the words in the article that said: ...the dog’s owner..” I know not all police are guilty of shooting pet dogs unnecessarily.
Or is it your acces to the Internet?
Never mind whether it’s just being reported more often.
This dude was a squatter and being in a vacant house, that could have been just a stray dog with no human. Little sympathy here.
A lot of cities/counties keep track of “recovered” dogs and cats. ie—dead dogs and cats that animal control picks up. 20 years ago San Jose had a binder 5” thick, 95% of the ‘recovered’ animals were dogs shot by police.
So...nothing new. Stories are just easy to forward by email/facebook/etc, especially since compared to today, almost no one had email back then
