There are a number of rare but serious physical complications resulting from general and local anesthetics, including increased risk of respiratory depression and heart attacks.

But the true effect of anesthesia on the human mind remains somewhat unclear.

One worrying symptom is emergence delirium - a temporary mental condition affecting around 5 per cent of patients that can result in a state of heightened emotion or excitement in the hours or days after anesthesia.

Patients suffering emergence delirium may also experience temporary psychomotor agitation, the symptoms of which include seemingly odd behaviour such as pacing around a room, removing clothing and in more extreme cases self-harming.

Other patients reports extreme long and short-term changes in personality following anesthesia, including developing bouts of depression and anxiety.

Probably why they tell you to not drive home, sign contracts or operate power tools with dynamite for a day or so afterwards.

Had general anesthetic for an operation recently. Coming out of it they could apparently hear me throughout most of the hospital.

I don’t remember a thing.

I always throw up....unsuspecting nurses have been decorated with red jello, all clean bedding is not off limits, and I even got the cataract surgeon. All I remember is them trying to clean it up.

My wife was knocked out for a c-section about 29 years ago...

Coming out she was literally screaming like a banshee for about a minute, went out again, woke up...

She never remembered a thing...

Totally shocked me...

During the prep for my last colonoscopoy, I had to listen to the prolonged expulsions of rectal gas from the patients on either side of my "booth". Following mine, I suspect I suffered the same indignity but was too out of it to remember, nor do I have any recollection of the doctor talking to me.......

LOL...I had to endure an elderly lady fighting with the nurse to get her to take off her panties for the procedure...

She was telling the nurse she "never" took her panties off except to take a bath...

Nurse asked her how many kids did she had...she answered "five"

LOL...the nurse was getting pissed...when they wheeled me out...
