BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Dr. Zenko Hrynkiw was at Brookwood Medical Center Tuesday morning when he was needed for emergency brain surgery at Trinity Medical Center.

The problem was the sudden snowstorm had locked down traffic, and the neurosurgeon didn't get farther than a few blocks.

"The cell service was bad so we were fading in and out," said Steve Davis, charge nurse in the neuro intensive care unit at Trinity. "At one point, I heard him say, 'I'm walking.'"

Davis had alerted authorities, and they were looking for him. There were supposed sightings, but no one could find him.

"The police were looking for him," Davis said.

Hours had gone by since the initial contact in the morning.

"He finally called me and said where's the patient? What's the status?" Davis said. "He spoke to the family and went off to surgery."

It was an emergency surgery for a traumatic brain injury. Hrynkiw is Trinity's only brain surgeon, Davis said.

"Without the surgery, the patient would have most likely died," Davis said. "But he is doing well.

Now there is someone who needs and deserves an award. I don’t expect we will hear anymore about this, can’t have something good in the news, unless its about odumbo’s impeachment. Now that would be newsworthy.

I read a number of good things that strangers are doing for people down south right now.

At my office, a dept had a conference call and found that some of our Atlanta area associates had invited random stranded folks into their homes until the situation improved.

Once Obama hears about it, he’ll probably be investigated for causing all the need for search parties. You know, reckless self-centeredness. Can’t have somebody going against the odds and doing things like this! It will make the prez look absolutely worthless.

It is one of those that I hope people remember when some start slamming doctors and nurses and hospitals and the ‘health care industry’ in general.

This doc did what every surgeon I have ever known has done, give his all to make things better.

My dad had a Jeep (47 Willys) that was always ready with emergency gear in case he got that early morning call that said we need you. As an adult I can understand his sacrifice. As a child, all I could think was ‘cool we got a Jeep’

Absolutely. My grandfather was a doctor, as was my uncle. (Unfortunately, there are no doctors in this generation of my family). I remember many family gatherings/holidays when one or both would be absent as they needed to attend to their patients in the hospital.

The vast majority of doctors are very special folks who don’t only have a job, but a vocation for healing. They deserve every cent they earn.

Obamacare will soon destroy that.
