Did police go too far by shoving Fox 2 reporter M.L. Elrick?
Motor City Muckraker ^ | January 29, 2014 | Steve Neavling

Two Detroit cops shoved Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter M.L. Elrick on Tuesday while he tried to interview Council President Pro Tem George Cushingberry at the start of a public council meeting.

Video shows the Fox 2 reporter getting prepared to ask Cushingberry a question at the entrance of the meeting when two officers forcefully pushed Elrick back.

It was an odd reaction by security because reporters commonly approach council members before meetings.

Fox 2 has launched a complaint with Police Chief James Craig.

In the video, Elrick refers to Motor City Muckraker and the time I ended up in the emergency room after being assaulted by council security about three years ago.

What happened to cause that, usually that doesn’t manifest itself out of thin air.

I don’t know anything about this particular case. And, even if it is a Fox reporter, I’d like to say something.

Reporters, those that call themselves ‘journalists’ and all the other self-proclaimed ‘keepers of the public trust’ often think their press card or badge entitles them to preference, priority, or special consideration above others.

I recently watched a TV promo here in Atlanta area (while waiting out the snowmageddon II) and keep seeing some doofus on TV station staff who is one of those “Consumer Advocates”.

In the promo, he’s investigating odometer rollback crime. In the spot, he’s got a used car dealer corner who ends up saying, “I get as-is, and I sell as-is.” The next thing, this “advocate” says, “I want to see the odometer reading from 5 cars on this lot.”

It was a demand, an order. I just sat there thinking what I’d tell him. “Who the f@ck do you think you are? Show me a subpoena, a court order or introduce me to a cop. Either that or get the f@ck off my lot.”

The truth is these ‘journalists’ think the 1st amendment accords them power over others - even to the extent they can negate others’ rights to the very same amendment.

As far as I’m concerned, they aren’t my representative - they never were. They abdicated that luxury when they became ideologues and politickers.

Hard to say what happened because we only see the part the media wants us to see. I’d have to see the whole tape.

I’m about the last person to stand up for a city council member but I also don’t know what the format of the event was and whether questioning him there was appropriate.

Fox 2 has launched a complaint with Police Chief James Craig.

Complaints are coming hot and heavy since Chief Craig spoke out in favor of armed citizens.

The only decent reporter/journalist in Detroit is Charlie LeDuff. He’s very aggressive but knows where to draw a line.

A few months back he did an editorial piece calling on his fellow reporters to get the hell off the victim’s lawn. If they want to ask questions they should ask the accused (former city council president Charles Pugh who appears to have a thing for young boys)

Like I said, I don’t know about this case. I was giving my overall opinion of what I think is about the lowest moralistic profession one could hold in this day and age. It is second only to ‘politician’ in my opinion.

Cushingberry is the guy that got pulled over and had weed and booze in the car, The cops gave him a wink and a nod.

What they claim the video shows.

Video shows the Fox 2 reporter getting prepared to ask Cushingberry a question at the entrance of the meeting when two officers forcefully pushed Elrick back.

But the video starts with the reporter and cop wrestling at the door. The Sgt, ends the minor scuffle without a word and gently leads the reporter away. It wasn't exactly a beat down.

Any video provided by a ‘journalist’ will be edited to elicit the desired response. Even when they don't have the footage they need, they show a scuffle, and then back story it with narrative that doesn't quite comport, but it is still exuberant.

I just don't believe them any more. Staged pictures, edited videos, damning narrative just doesn't cut it for me any more.

Actually they didn’t find booze in the truck, they found a couple of old empties in the back. The pot was in the possession of the passenger who had a medical marijuana card.

The slap on the wrist was in getting a warning over a tail light rather than a citation.

Cushingberry filed a complaint for racial profiling against the hispanic and middle eastern cop.

The badgemonkeys assaulted him for one simple reason, because
they could. They are never held accountable so they act out with
impunity. Most lower species will abuse and take advantage of others
when given the chance. Badgemonkeys are among the worst offenders.
