Woman gives 3 Ill. waitresses $5,000 each

Three waitresses at an Illinois restaurant say they could only stare in disbelief when a woman handed them each a $5,000 check over the weekend.

The owner of the Boone County Family Restaurant in Caledonia, Matt Nebiu, said business was slow Saturday when the customer handed checks to 25-year-old Amy Sabani, 23-year-old Sarah Seckinger and 28-year-old Amber Kariolich.

It does, but the government hates competition. She will be tracked down and audited to make sure the IRS gets their fair share.

They won't get a dime: the gift tax exclusion for 2014 is $14,000 per person.

Sabani said the woman told the waitresses to use the money for school and "everything else in life."

That's a gift. The recipients are not liable for any tax.

True, if the IRS considers it a gift. But, tip income is generally taxable, and they may call this, that.
