The little 5 packs weren't that great, but we smoked 'em.

Even the cigarettes were good

A little dry but highly smokable!

Our daughter sent a picture of empty egg shelves at their local grocery store yesterday. They live in Wichita KA, and people went out to stock up for the snow storm. It is a flat 0º F there now.

There are also popbeans, but they can be hard to find. I have seeds for 3 varieties but I need to expand my seed supply a few times before I have enough to feel comfortable taste-testing them.

Popbeans can be toasted in a dry skillet just until the skins split and they make a popping sound. Just like popcorn, only they won’t form those big poofy cloud shapes. Once popped, they are fully cooked and can be eaten as-is, or you can simmer the popped beans and they’ll cook in about 10-20 minutes.

(I’m pretty sure the big poofy cloud shape is a matter of breeding, and is going to be one of my projects as soon as I have enough seen to play with.)

(PS: Please excuse any typos, I’m typing this in the dark while my sleepytime meds are kicking in. Wheeee!)

In 1980, the USAF served us C rats that were at least 20 years old, and the peanut butter was just fine.

johnny you sure those weren't the same K & C rations we had back in '68-'69 , they where dated 1945 and some as new as '52

I think that the basic items that you can get from the LDS online store are some of the best bang for the buck for long term basic stuff. Very reasonable, and they didn’t charge shipping.

Those boxes are stacked and won’t need to be opened for 10 to 20 years. So I some every so often to just have in case we need more than normal. They also fit under the bed easily.

I particularly like their kit. It has the basics for 1 person for one month. It cost about 30 bucks. Had 6 #10 cans. Two different kinds of wheat, flour, pinto beans, oats, and rice. This along with the usual staples of sugar, salt, pepper, oil, fats, syrups, honey, coffe, tea, some canned meats etc from your local store, can make for some great eating.

I've mentioned to my sil who smokes a little..about 2 cigs a day....that one can grow their own little tobacco plant...I know I'm a bad person for making suggestions to help someone smoke, but the little he does smoke, why not....

moderation in all things....smoke...drink...food...alcohol

That was the natural oil in the peanuts that went rancid, also more likely to happen with stored brown rice than white because of the oil in the retained hulls.

I’ll bet even with storebought “natural, organic” peanut butter, the same would happen, as the oil is more likely to separate into layers within the jar over the long term.

Regular commercially produced PB, with preservatives and additives meant to prevent separating should be OK.

All the good news about honey leaves out how storebought is pasteurised, killing its utility as a topically applied antibiotic. To my knowledge, tho, that doesn’t negate the other good qualities of honey.

I pressure can our beans by the quart. I also cook, rinse the heck out of the rice, then dehydrate it. Quick rice that revives in the cooking beans.

I also pressure can bacon, hamburger, ham, meatballs, etc. I have a productive strawberry garden. Jam lifts the heart. I can or dehydrate almost everything in our garden. We grow the bulk of our tobacco. I grow various beans, yet have a deep appreciation for the bulk 25# bags.

Goat milk, even dehydrated, has more protein than cow milk. I made up a whey and goat milk, with cocoa and powdered sugar, for a protein drink to have on hand. (All powdered, of course) also have mixes on hand I made from scratch for treats. Cocoa powder, butter powder and powdered sugar can fill an emergency chocolate fix. Add egg powder and I am on my way to pudding. ;)

Yes, I make our bread, hot dog and hamburger buns. I try to make all I can by scratch.

I think you could simply weigh them and get the equivalent.
I’m guessing that the hot hands would have a LOT more than your avg O2 absorber.

Same principle as sun tea. Set a can of most anything that only needs warmed through out in the hot afternoon sun and it’s ready to eat.

There’s a reason why chocolate is included in military MRE’s.

I was freaked the first time I had to buy beef at the grocery store. To top it off, it wasn’t wrapped in butcher paper.

Save out a few of those dried beans to plant so you’ll never run out of beans.

Don’t try to use a regular needle and thread and don’t buy a suture needle and suture thread. Buy a medical stapler and medical staples from Amazon.

Agreed , even the sharpest regular needle is tough to use... Didn’t know of the “CELOX” ,, although I have seen similar peoducts .. I prefer a “belt and suspenders approach” ,, original superglue (NOT the gel type) , staples and support the staples with tape...
