Skip to comments. What game should I download?
Posted on 02/07/2014 12:42:46 PM PST by Wage Slave
I'm going to be in a hotel room without tv (only cheesy mexican tv via antenna) or internet access for several days. Can't go out sightseeing due to safety reasons. No, I'm not being held captive. Anyway, I have books to read but would like to download a game.
Any suggestions for the old fashioned adventure or mystery games? I'm old....I loved the original DOS adventure game with the trolls and the plovers. I'm female, so not looking for violent games....more the thinking, problem solving type.
Any safe websites out there that won't load my computer down with malware?
Okay, I'm now out of ideas.
Suggestion: Tropico 4.
You are El Presidente, and you run a banana republic.
It’s inexpensive and available for download on Steam and I’ve found it to be a relaxing way to pass a few hours.
Well.. you could log on to healthcare.gov and while trying to navigate around it, add bogus information any place you get a chance.
If you mess it up, you win.
Assume you will hacked. Period. In Russia, computers, cell phones, etc are hacked within minutes of connecting to the Internet.
If you are going to be there, take a computer that doesn’t have links, address books, financial data, etc. Just bare bones.
Then that would be me, what hotel are you staying in?
I can download it from a secure home connection before I travel to the hotel, so I should be ok. More worried about the game websites.
I used to play Jetpack back in the 90’s. Lots of fun and no violence. Haven’t played in awhile, but here’s a possible download site. http://www.dosgamesonline.com/index/game/248/Jetpack.html
I love games of all types, but the game I’m constantly playing on my phone is Spider Solitaire. One-suit play is pretty relaxing. If you want to up the challenge, just increase the number of suits.
Do you have an iPad or other tablet by any chance, or are you using a laptop? Many of the old text adventure games are now in the public domain and can be downloaded for free. Zork I, II, and III are a lot of fun and are available.
If you have a tablet, there is an app called “Frotz” that let’s you download and play tons of text adventures, both classic ones and newly user-created ones as well. If you are using a laptop, I would just start by searching for “Zork” and you will probably find it and many others.
Don’t know if text adventures (”Interactive Fiction”) interest you, but it is a thought.
Have you ever played Ultima IV, V, and VI?
Ummm...candy crush...angry birds...buttons and scissors...

You might enjoy interactive fiction pieces that are still being written, and offered free to download. Some of these are exceptional. Here’s a link to a list of “favorites” lists with ratings and reviews:
That was one of my favorite games back in the day.
Original poster (OP) would probably like games like Kings Quest or Myst or something.
Site is clean.
I will 2nd Spider Solitaire. It’s likely already on your computer so no download necessary. It’s very addicting.
Play 2 suites
1 Suit is too easy, 4 Suits is impossible
2 suits is hard enough, maybe if you are a natural you will win 10% of the time, but as a beginner expect maybe 5%
Minesweeper is always fun to, but you have to have a good mouse.
Colossal Cave Adventure
Try ‘Plants and Zombies’ that is if you can take a little nectar and stamens scattered about after the battle.
I'm female, so not looking for violent games....
Never mind. (Although EVE had an all-female pirate corporation for a while, if I recall correctly, its motto was: "Don't forget, you got beaten by a girl. Yarr!")
Lots and lots of DRM-free games. Aside from the good old ultra-violent ones, there are plenty of mystery and puzzle-solving oriented titles. Dirt cheap. Check it out.

Suggestion: Americo 2014.
You are El Presidente and you transform a once thriving country into a Banana Republic.
Sorry, I couldn’t resist.
Nope, that'll never work...
If she's accessing from Mexico it'll run like clockwork.
LOL. Yeah, I think I’ve seen that one.
El Presidente running a banana republic? Why does that sound familiar?
Download DOSbox emulator?
I’ll be at the El Cheapo Inn in Mexico.
Do you have DosBox downloaded? You can find a bunch of the old Dos games for download.
Plus I have emulators for Super NES and Playstation and Game Boy Advance. Lots of websites have games to download.
Legally you can download rhem (the proprietary games) for 24 hours.
I downloaded Mario Kart and a bunch of stuff
...or kids programming for that matter. hehe
I’d also highly recommend EVE Online, but that won’t fly (literally) where she’s going to be.
BTW, we moved our little corp to nullsec (Cobalt Edge) back in October to join the Explicit Alliance.
Got in on the HED-GP and B-R5RB actions, plus a whole bunch of lesser ones.
Can’t even imagine returning to highsec.
I remember those games!
An obama emulator that old??? Really?
Well then, how about Oregon Trail freeware?
is EVE available for Linux?
..never mind my previous post. hehe
Thanks for the suggestions, peeps. I’m going to check all of them out before I go.
Also this too. A lot of good RPGs on here.
Any of the candy games (jellies, candy crush, candy mania, etc), any angry birds games especially IMHO the rio one. Also one my kids really like called ‘cut the rope’.
I have a major move coming soon, so I'11 just let my account lapse until I can devote a little more time to it.
