I distinguish between the NSA, which of course knows all about all of us (including our real names, addresses, bank account numbers, tax picture, type of guns we own, result of last prostate exam/pap smear, etc.) and marketers.
What ever the government does the private sector (hackers) can do and often BETTER.

They’re data mining what you think by IP address and probably cookie. This allows them better targeting advertising, which is the name of the game on the internet. They don’t care what your name is, they care if the person sitting at that computer is more or less likely than the norm to buy Product X. Demographic science has gotten almost creepy in their ability to analyze and predict purchasing behavior.
My sister-in-law thought it was funny that Mr. Aragon and I were die hard fans of a zombie show....she hates horror, and says she prefers “character-driven drama”, which is really what The Walking Dead is about.
She and her husband watched an episode out of curiosity. They became instantly hooked, ordered Seasons 1 and 2, and watched them over the course of a few nights. Season 3 was late getting to them, and she called us up, breathlessly wanting to borrow our Season 3, until she found out UPS had left it on the porch. Says it’s the best show they’ve ever watched.
Okay, I was hoping for Darryl or Merle, but Rick will do. Glenn wouldn't be so bad either, especially since he's got Maggie to come home to...yowza!

Data mining that you are describing is generations old, decades ago you could add a fake middle initial to your public dealings, from magazine subscriptions to hotel check ins, to drop card contests, to 800 numbers, and then notice the focused mailings that the name started receiving at your house.
